A leading opponent of bringing a casino to New Hampshire is charging a
conflict of interest between the state's police association, troopers
union and a top State House lobbyist.
Jim Rubens, a former state
senator who heads the Granite State Coalition Against Expanded
Gambling, said Tuesday that Jim Demers of Demers and Blaisdell of
Concord represent the New Hampshire Police Association and the New
Hampshire Troopers Association, as well as Cannery Resorts Casinos and
International Game Technology (IGT).
Cannery Resorts Casinos, is
a subsidiary of Millennium Gaming, which has an option to purchase
Salem's Rockingham Park, and IGT is the self-described "industry's
leading manufacturer of gaming machines."
The NHPA and NHTA
formally endorsed Senate Bill 152 on Monday. The bill, which passed the
state Senate last week and has the support of Gov. Maggie Hassan, calls
for legalization of a casino with 5,000 slot machines and 150 table
games.
Rubens,Insteon released one of the first smartphone-controlled goodantiquelampss this
week. reacting to the endorsement of the gambling bill by the two
groups, said, "The police and troopers unions could speak with the New
Hampshire Association of Chiefs of Police and every attorney general
over the past 35 years, who have all repeatedly testified that casinos
cause increases in serious crimes.The assertion that washerextractor don't reduce carbon emissions is a myth,
"They
could review the published, peer-reviewed literature showing that
casinos cause increases in serious crimes. They could read the
Governor's Gaming Study Commission final report that finds that a single
Salem casino as proposed would cause 1,200 additional serious crimes.
"Finally,"
Rubens said, "both unions might want to do a conflict-of-interest check
on their lobbyist (Demers), who also represents Millennium Gaming and
the world's biggest video slot machine manufacturer."
Demers
responded that his representation of those groups and companies "would
be a conflict if we were on the opposite sides of the issue, but we're
not, so in that regard there is no conflict."
He said did not try to influence either group's stand. Both have supported expanded gambling for several years.
"I
know for a fact that the troopers association looked very seriously at
this and reached out to troopers in states that have casino

require little to no maintenance and allow easy access." Demers said.
"They did their due diligence without us asking them to do anything and
found that the allegations that Mr. Rubens makes about runaway crime
just aren't true."
Demers said, "There are 40 states with casino
gambling today and not one of them is experiencing what Mr. Rubens
claims will happen in New Hampshire. The discussion about this is
reaching the foolish stage."
The troopers union and police association, he said, "know there is a need for funding in New Hampshire for critical services."
Demers
also said neither he nor partner Robert Blaisdell tried to convince the

"These
associations are fully capable of understanding the issues they get
involved in and reaching their own conclusions," he said.
Seth
Cooper, president of the 286-member NHTA, said Demers and Blaisdell
"provided us with information" about what is in the bill "so that we
could make an independent decision," but, "At no point did they try to
influence what we did."
NHPA President David Young said his
group has between 2,000 and 2,500 registered members. He said NHPA is
not a union and represents the interests of as many as 5,000 active and
retired law enforcement officials.

Separate Renewables Obligation Certificate for rooftop PV
The government has
confirmed that it will introduce a new Renewables Obligation Certificate (ROC)
banding specifically for medium-sized roof-mounted solar systems.
As predicted last week by Solar Power Portal, the anticipated final RO banding published today by the Department for Energy and Climate (DECC) contains a ROC band for commercial roof-mounted PV and another separate one for ground-mounted systems.
In its response to the recent consultation on the RO support for solar and biomass, the government also said it had set the RO for ground-mounted PV at a higher rate than initially envisaged in the consultation - 1.6 rather than 1.5/MWh. However, it fell short of the 1.8/MWh the industry had said was necessary to ensure the financial feasibility of projects.
The banding for the new rooftop RO will be set at a higher rate than the ground-mounted PV RO category and is designed to stimulate investment in solar systems on large factory or warehouse buildings.
It will start at 1.7/MWh when it comes into effect next year and fall incrementally by 0.1.MWh each year until 2017, when ROCs will be replaced with the contracts for difference outlined in the Energy Bill.
The new banding has been brought in to respond to industry concerns that at 7.1p/kWh, the feed-in tariff (FiT) currently available for mid-sized, usually rooftop PV systems of between 250kW and 5MW is insufficient.
Before today’s announcement the Solar Trade Association had argued that although in the long term the FiT is the best mechanism to drive the mid-sized market, a short-term alternative to the low FiT available for this segment of the market would be to introduce a separate, higher RO specifically for mid-scale rooftop PV.Continental Girbau's programmable commercial laserengraver are designed to properly clean a firefighter's turnout gear.

As reported last week on Solar Power Portal's sister site PV-Tech, G24 had entered administration in an attempt to save the business as a going concern. Wilkins Kennedy LLP were appointed joint administrators of G24 on 3 December and a deal to sell the business and its assets was concluded on 13 December.

Round out your holiday decor
With just more than a week before Christmas, time is running out to do any last minute decorating, shopping or baking.
But if your front door is still looking a little bare, floral designer Deb Griffin says there’s plenty of time left to decorate your own holiday wreath.
Griffin has been creating flower arrangements and wreaths for Hallstrom’s Florist and Greenhouse for nearly 20 years.
Griffin said you can use either a real evergreen wreath or an artificial one. However she recommended using artificial flowers — what she called “permanent botanicals” — to embellish it.
“Adding permanent botanicals to fresh wreaths is fun,” she said.
No matter which type of wreath you choose, Griffin said the process is basically the same. The first step is to choose a color scheme or theme for the wreath decorations.
For the holidays, most people tend to go with traditional reds, Griffin said. But that’s not the only option available. For anyone looking for a modern look, what Griffin called “peacock colors” (purples, turquoises and blues) are trendy at the moment. Still, she encouraged going with what you like.
“I always say it’s whatever looks good to your eye,” she said.
Once you’ve chosen your colors, Griffin said the next step is to pick out your focal point. Last week, Griffin was working with three large red poinsettias dusted in glitter.
Then, Griffin followed the “rule of odd numbers” often touted by designers.LED lamps are made that replace screw-in incandescent or bluebrightqw light bulbs. But it’s not always her strategy.
“I don’t go by the rules all the time,” Griffin said. Sometimes, her focal point will be two large poinsettias connected with ribbon.“I think it’s all in the eye of the beholders,” she said.
For accent flowers and filler, she chose smaller red berry bunches and some small white flowers. The main thing, Griffin added, is that you pick what you like.
“If you’re first just staring out, keep it simple and use your favorite things,” Griffin said.Many industries can use Origin Laser engraving and ledlight for a huge range of applications. “You can always add more as you get more comfortable.”
To attach the flowers to the wreath, Griffin used floral wire. While many permanent botanicals come already attached to a wire, Griffin said the extra wire is necessary for a firm hold.

Revisiting grades
About eight months ago I sat on a Princeton-bound train, stared out
the window and thought about the semester toward which I was currently

I remembered telling my Princeton interviewer that “I love to learn,” and yet, to be honest, what I loved even more was the sweet rush of an A or the warm blush of a teacher’s praise — delicious soul food for the ego. I proceeded to ask all of my professors to omit their letter grade from any evaluation they returned to me. I wanted their comments, just not a grade. As I forged into new classes I found that for one of the first times in my life I was excited to go back to school. This excitement propelled me into a new, deeper form of engagement: I delved into my readings, spoke up in class, tried to share what I was learning with anyone who would listen and found myself doing extra reading or research simply out of curiosity.
I hit the Writing Center for the first time and, traditionally averse to office hours, I met with all of my professors outside of class, often on multiple occasions,Modern lighting and goodledlighting and lamps specialists. to discuss an exam or a paper or just to chat. When I got papers or problem sets back, I focused on the comments and looked closely at the problems I had missed, internalizing what I had done wrong and, more importantly, what I could do better.
The week before midterms I actually found myself telling people I was pumped: “I just can’t wait for that ‘Aha!’ moment when all this material we’ve been covering comes together,” I would say jovially. To their quizzical and often concerned looks, I would explain that I wanted to understand the material and the midterm exists for me to showcase that understanding; why would I be stressed about some grade that comes after-the-fact? Josh chimed in, reporting that he had never before felt so little stress and so much exuberance in an exam period.
To the high achievers, I confess that knowing your grades may actually help in a class you have little interest in or are just trying to pass. But what about the ones in which the reading makes your mouth drop open or you look forward to lab, in which you believe that understanding the material will truly make you a better chemist, philosopher,USB Snowman moduleclamp which contains a string LED lights. writer, engineer? If you’re going to work your hardest to grasp the material, how much does the grade actually matter? Even further, I posit that removing grades from those courses will push you to engage further with the material, work harder and stress less, ultimately improving your learning experience and potentially your performance.

Albeo wins patent for integrating bare LED die directly in fixtures

The company is focused on using small low-to mid-power LEDs such as 0.25-mm chips with a focus squarely on the linear troffer market and the huge installed base of lighting that's in need of replacement in commercial and industrial settings. Already SSL vendors are targeting that application both with purpose-built fixtures and with LED-based T8 retrofit tubes – both offering greater efficiency but struggling to match the cost of fluorescent technology.
Bisberg claims the chip-in-fixture approach will offer lower cost than current approaches.This ledtube operates red, amber and green LEDs in the correct sequence for a single UK traffic light. He said that the DOE has estimated that the package in which an LED die is encapsulated is 40% of the cost of the packaged LED component. Moreover, he said the printed circuit board can be 20-30% of the cost of an LED fixture.
One challenge for Albeo will be adapting equipment that can handle bare die to work on the scale of a fixture in terms of size. The equipment used by LED makers to handle bare die is designed to place the die in small packages that max out at the chip-on-board size in the range of a 1-in diameter. The machines used to manufacture larger printed-circuit boards by fixture makers and subcontractors aren't designed to handle bare die.
Bisberg said that there are machines that can place bare die on a 1×1-ft substrate today. He said Albeo would likely start with smaller subassemblies, several of which would be integrated into a fixture. And Albeo will likely need a close partner from among the LED manufacturers to accomplish that goal.
The company faces a second challenge in that it intends to use blue LEDs without the phosphor layer applied. The patent covers both direct phosphor application and remote phosphor approaches, although the direct approach would be after the bare die are assembled to a substrate. Bisberg said that inkjet technology can be used to apply phosphor to individual LEDs spread over the scale of a 2x2-ft, or even 4x4-ft substrate.LED lights use less power and last for much longer than ledstriplightry.
The concept of working with bare die is likely frightful for anyone that has worked in the traditional semiconductor industry with large ICs that have many connections where packaging is extremely important. But Bisberg says that "LEDs are pretty simple devices with just two terminals." He said the company has built full-size troffers by hand in the lab using the patented techniques.

One challenge for Albeo will be adapting equipment that can handle bare die to work on the scale of a fixture in terms of size. The equipment used by LED makers to handle bare die is designed to place the die in small packages that max out at the chip-on-board size in the range of a 1-in diameter. The machines used to manufacture larger printed-circuit boards by fixture makers and subcontractors aren't designed to handle bare die.
Bisberg said that there are machines that can place bare die on a 1×1-ft substrate today. He said Albeo would likely start with smaller subassemblies, several of which would be integrated into a fixture. And Albeo will likely need a close partner from among the LED manufacturers to accomplish that goal.
The company faces a second challenge in that it intends to use blue LEDs without the phosphor layer applied. The patent covers both direct phosphor application and remote phosphor approaches, although the direct approach would be after the bare die are assembled to a substrate. Bisberg said that inkjet technology can be used to apply phosphor to individual LEDs spread over the scale of a 2x2-ft, or even 4x4-ft substrate.LED lights use less power and last for much longer than ledstriplightry.
The concept of working with bare die is likely frightful for anyone that has worked in the traditional semiconductor industry with large ICs that have many connections where packaging is extremely important. Christmas in Madrid continues to get eco-friendlier. This Christmas expects a 27-percent lower consumption rate than 2010, with the same 230 hours of lighting. Ten Japanese electric power companies (see Note) announced on September 12, 2011, that they had each filed applications with the Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry for approval to set up a new contract tariff category for lighting devices of up to 10 watts.
To meet demand for energy conservation and power saving, highly efficient and low wattage lights have been developed, such as light emitting diode (LED) and organic electroluminescence lights. The new tariff category will be applied to such efficient lighting devices, whose broader use is expected.
Fixed monthly rates for each light are set for "fixed-rate lighting" such as signboards and common space lighting in apartment buildings and "public street lighting A" such as street lights and traffic lights. The minimum category for these lightings is currently up to 20 watts, except for Okinawa Electric Power Company, whose minimum is up to 40 watts.
Under the new tariff, each company except Okinawa will divide "up to 20 watts" into two categories: "up to 10 watts" and "up to 20 watts over 10 watts" while Okinawa will introduce these new categories. MY guess is that one day the hole used for a LED light on our mobiles will double as a pretty decent projector and probably a 3D one at that.
That day is some way off for mass-market smartphones, although Samsung has a projector in its Beam smartphone,Compact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs. but it has a rather puny six lumen output.
If you want a projector inside a mobile-sized device today, it will probably be a stand-alone unit such as Acer's C20 projector.
The Acer's footprint is about the same as an iPhone 4, although somewhat thicker.
The $349 gadget has a screen resolution of 854x480 pixels and throws a beam at 20 lumens.
It is designed for zapping up Powerpoint and video presentations on the go for a small (read not too far away) audience.In the case of Cree a significant led light bulbs amount of their LED sales come from the purchase of Cotco whose primary focus was on moving message panels used in displays/electronic bill boards.
Acer claims a maximum projected screen size of 146cmx82cm for the unit, but I found the practical limit about 10-20 per cent less than this and then only in a fully darkened room.
