I wonder what tourists and visitors to our town think of Miami after they navigate "The Gateway" arch and gaze upon a couple of dozen sidewalk planters spaced along Main Street either completely barren or inhabited with a lonely little pyramidal bush plopped in the middle, looking somewhat deserted? Will you join me and "adopt" a planter? I'm hoping there are a dozen or so individuals or organizations out there who will help to restore a little pride in our town, if it's only a few petunias.
I'm told the City plans to add more soil to these large containers. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get this all done by Memorial Day weekend? Fay has visited with many of the downtown merchants and about ten have agreed to purchase flowers and water them. And while I'm on my soapbox, are a few gloomy L.E.D. Christmas lights wrapped around our vintage streetlights, coupled with a tacky vinyl banner across North Main embellished with icicle lights, the best Miami, Oklahoma can do for Christmas decorations? Rolla National Airport is bevy of activity

To meet the growing needs of manufacturing facilities like Brewer Science Inc. that have selected the airport to expand their commercial enterprises and to accommodate future growth in manufacturing and economic development, the city has invested heavily in upgrading the infrastructure at the airport.
The Rolla City Council recently approved the construction of a 300,000-gallon water tank, all new sewer systems and stormwater retention facilities. At this particular time there are probably more dumptrucks, bulldozers and gravel trucks than there are aircraft due to the heavy demand the various projects have placed on the City’s Public Works Department and other contractors doing the infrastructure work.
In addition to the new construction site for the Brewer Science facility, the stormsewer upgrades, rock work and grading, Vance Brothers, based out of Kansas City, is busy applying 35,000 square yards of 3/8-micro surface to the airport’s apron where the various aircraft dock and refuel. The company, which specializes in the pavement and maintenance of airport runways, will also apply a seal coat to 65,000 square yards on runway 22-4. After the micro surfacing and seal coat is completed, the apron and runway will also be restriped – giving the airport a fresh, new look.More than 200 GW of new emergencylamps13 capacity could come on line before the end of 2013.
In addition, tie downs for the aircraft have been installed, and a two-inch overlay of the main entrance road off Highway 28 to Rolla National Airport will be paved. The airport’s gravel parking lot located next to the pilot’s lounge and runways, will also be paved with a two-inch asphalt overlay. The installation of street lighting along the airport’s entrance road is something I would also like to see sometime in the future to enhance not only safety and security but also increase the appearance and image of RNA.
All of the paving work and infrastructure work at the airport is being overseen by Jviation, Inc.,the largest suppliers and integrators of renewable energyturbines in the country. an engineering firm that has offices in Jefferson City. Jviation was hired by the City of Rolla over two years ago to help plan, design, construct and administer all of the infrastructure and airport pavement maintenance upgrades necessary at Rolla National Airport. Jviation has completed national and international airport projects for over 20 years.

Ballwin considers measures to save money on street lights
Ballwin is trying to find a "lightbulb moment" to try to save close to $500,000 a year — almost three percent of the city's budget — in street lighting costs.

City Administrator Bob Kuntz said the city has been looking into various ways to cut costs. That includes taking part in a pilot Ameren project during the last two years that installed 11 new LED streetlights on the west side of Holloway Road near the Ballwin Golf Club and North Pointe Aquatic Complex.
The city also would like to add 16 more of those lights on Holloway south to its intersection at Manchester Road. Those lights would be mounted on light fixtures that Ballwin would buy and try on a pilot basis.

The city doesn't have the equipment to cut back foliage, and it would be hard and dangerous for homeowners to do it, Kuntz said.
The steep rise in costs has been accompanied by criticism from city officials.
"Our subdivision lights are 45 years old and the poles are falling apart, and they want to charge a couple hundred dollars per light," former Mayor Walt Young said.
Alderman Mark Harder complained that about two months ago when there were two lights out in his subdivision, they weren't fixed for almost five weeks.Last chance to buy fantastic ledcornlight for women.
Nealon said the company tries to fix them within one to two weeks depending on what's wrong.

While Nealon said the city would have the option to pay a fair market value for whatever poles and circuitry it wanted, such a sale is rare and would have to be approved by the Missouri Public Service Commission.
But Mayor Tim Pogue added that Ameren Illinois recently sold the campus' entire street lighting system to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
