Intrigue surrounds American's death in Singapore

Documents on a hard drive his parents found in his Singapore apartment included a draft agreement for IME to share what Todd was working on with Chinese telecommunications company Huawei, says Colin Humphreys, a pioneer in the emerging field of gallium nitride semiconductors. Huawei is known to U.S. intelligence agencies. Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CBS' 60 Minutes in October that the company has ties to China's military and intelligence services and is "a serious threat" to U.S. national security. 

Humphreys, director of the University of Cambridge Center for Gallium Nitride, analyzed documents retrieved from Todd's hard drive at the request of the Financial Times. Speaking to USA TODAY, Humphreys said the documents show that Todd traveled for IME to the United States to be trained on equipment used to produce a powerful new class of semiconductors that outperform silicon and can be used to greatly boost the transmissions of cellphone towers, military radars and radar jamming devices. 

Gallium nitride is most commonly used in LED lighting, to produce high-intensity light without much heat or energy use. Todd was involved in cutting-edge research on using GaN wafers that were 8 inches in diameter and can be loaded with electronic devices. Libya could produce more energy in solar power than oil

A study led by the university’s School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment found that the oil-rich nation could generate enough renewable power to meet its own demand and a “significant part of the world energy demand by exporting electricity”. 

Libya is located on the cancer orbit line and is exposed to the sun’s rays throughout the year with long hours during the day. It has an average daily solar radiation rate of about 7.1 kilowatt hours per square metre per day (kWh/m/day) on a flat plane on the coast and 8.1kWh/m/day in the south region. By comparison, the UK’s average solar radiation rate is less than half that amount at about 2.95kWh/m/day. 

If the North African country - which is estimated to be 88 per cent desert - used 0.1% of its landmass to harness solar power, it could produce the equivalent to almost seven million barrels of crude oil per day in energy, the study found. Currently, Libya produces about 1.41 million barrels of crude oil per day. 

Researcher Dr Amin Al-Habaibeh, who is leading the Innovative and Sustainable Built Environment Technologies research group at the university, said: “Although Libya is rich in renewable energy resources, it is in urgent need of a more comprehensive energy strategy. How car manufacturers are combating 'alarm fatigue'

Beeps, chimes, bongs, these are the sounds of our modern world. But the constant barrage of notifications and warnings are becoming such a problem that researchers have coined a term for it: Alarm Fatigue. Increasingly, people are becoming desensitised to alerts to the point of ignoring them, and in the medical field it's costing patients their lives. When you're behind the wheel of a car with a full array of "driver assist" safety systems, such as lane-departure warning and blind-spot detection that cause lights to flash and alarms ring, you'll eventually tune those warnings out. 

Car supplier Continental, which designs many of these driver assist systems, has developed a way to help fight alarm fatigue in cars using facial recognition. And yes, even more flashing lights. 

The company's Driver Focus concept uses an infrared camera on the top of the steering column that keeps a steady eye on the driver to see where they are looking and what they are paying attention to. 

"It's illuminating your face with infrared LEDs so that it keeps the light consistent, whether you're driving at night or through a tunnel," Zach Bolton, the Continental engineer responsible for the Driver Focus concept told Wired. "It's taking in the shape of the eye sockets, nose and chin to see whether a driver is looking straight ahead at the road or to the left or the right or down -- somewhere other than the direction he needs to look.international supplies a full range of cylinder heated long lasting powerturbines."

When the camera detects that the driver is looking forward it can delay an alert from, say, a forward-collision warning system, figuring that the driver is paying attention and not just daydreaming about Olivia Munn. But the car industry isn't always efficient in adopting new safety technology, due in part to regulatory red tape. Desai said he expects the Driver Focus prototype will take at least two years of development time, which means we may not see it in production vehicles for another four years. Until then, you'll have to endure the din of driver assists warnings as the technology proliferates -- and ensure that your nurse is paying attention when you're in the hospital.

Incentives make power-saving a no brainer

The old fluorescent tubes were replaced with energy efficient tubes, new halogen flood lights were placed over produce bins to bring out the best in the stacks of eggplants, tomatoes and greens giving the whole a crisper look, said Joe.

In an effort to keep cold air from spilling out and thereby wasting the cost of power to produce it, the store fitted night covers over refrigeration display cases, and a strip curtain and three air curtains at different entrances to its cold storage. 

Even replacing the exit sign with a new LED sign saved 1,183 kilowatt hours over a year’s operation reducing electricity costs by $70. 

After seeing the benefits of being power smart in his Commercial Drive store, Joe introduced the same measures into his store at New Westminster Quay.

Street Lights To Be Shut Off in Pease Township

Plagued by cuts in local government funds by the state and failure of residents to approve a tax levy, the Pease Township trustees claim they do not have the funds to keep the street lights in the township lighted. 

At their meeting on Wednesday, the trustees voted "to shut off all 179 lights located in Pease Township effective March 1. This action is being taken due to the reduction of local government funds through the state and the failure this past November of a proposed levy that would have replaced the loss of those funds." 

The trustees said the levy had been anticipated to generate the revenue needed to sustain the cost of the lights. "The levy was critical due to the loss of revenue." Without the additional money the levy would have produced, the trustees say they cannot maintain the cost of keeping the street lights on. 

"Gov. Kasich and the Republican administration cut our local government funds - the funds that the majority of small government entities relied on heavily to continue daily operations. That is the reason villages,People are catching on to the fact that they make great ledstreetlight . libraries,The energy used in manufacturing and erecting a floorlamps is paid back in the first 3 to 6 months of operation. park districts and townships are now experiencing these problems," the trustees said in a statement issued following their meeting. 

No other sources of revenue can be used to finance the lights. "Road and bridge funds, per the Ohio Revised Code, can't be utilized to maintain street lights. Only the general fund can pay for lights; the general fund which is already burdened by mandates," the trustees' statement continued. 

The mandates, they pointed out, include contributions of $7,500 to the Belmont County Board of Elections and $15,000 to the Belmont County Health Department. "While our local government funds have been cut," the trustees maintained, "Gov. Kasich's rainy day fund has increased from approximately 25 cents to almost $2 billion. Ever since the official announcement that Boscov's department store would be moving into the Ohio Valley Mall before the arrival of the Christmas shopping season, there has been a lot of talk about the size of the store, since it will be taking over occupancy of five store locations - four currently operating and one vacant space.
