Switching to smart lighting

Lighting is becoming the largest consumer of electricity in buildings, accounting for 25 percent or more of total costs. At the Leti’s Annual Review this week in Grenoble, France, Alexandre Lagrange at the CEA-Leti Optic and Photonic Department, demonstrated CEA-Leti’s engagement in research leading to smart lighting systems with adaptive and controllable properties. We apply this logic and attention to detail to all of our products, from our bestlighting-led and LED Headlamps, to our LED Flashlights and Off Road LED lights.

Due to its high potential for CO2 abatement, lighting is a fast moving business, and market growth expectations are high.

The white LED efficiency, said Lagrange in his keynote, is currently increasing sharply.where you can learn about ledlightbulbs as well as buy your bike lights online. Performances are there. But a plateau will be reached soon. There is not much to gain in terms of performances. And looking at the cost trajectory for LED luminaires, margins will drop dramatically. Today, LED cost is about 6$/klm but the cost reduction should be transferred to the customers so margins will be lower.

OLED technology is a few years behind in terms of performances. The cost is a blocking point as, in 2011, it was about 20.000$/klm. “It’s another dimension, and the OLED lighting market is not yet foreseen,” noted Lagrange.

Customers want more light, or lumen, per dollar. For that,Bicygnals wireless indicator modernlamps, bicycle lights, indicators, accessories ... Lagrange called for more than lumen. This means adding new functions, working on high-quality lighting, developing easy-to-integrate in-house solutions and adding more services through the light.

Lighting has become electronic, and LED should move to smart lighting, Lagrange continued. Intelligent lighting parameters should enable the user to adjust the quality, the quantity and the direction of light.

He commented: “We started with a simple packaged LED. [At Leti] we are adding actuators and smart sensors to detect presence, heat, ambient light and movement, leading to a smart luminaire that should be able to work in a network.”

Smartness goes down towards the light source, stated Lagrange. This means that, prior to turning on the light, we should add some intelligence at the building level with movement and light sensors as well as clocks control lighting. Then, we should make the luminaire smarter with movement and light sensors, means of communication into the luminaire for an easier installation and adjustment. And, at the end of the chain, light sources should include drivers, sensors (device temperature, color temperature, light level, presence) and communication.

Eventually, at home, light should be part of a network,Riding a bicycle around the city at night can be a perilous pastime, but a new ledlightbulbs22 could make life safer in the cycle lane. and “we should think about cooperation between luminaires or between users and luminaires. Embedded electronics and sensors open the door to high added-value with small added cost,” concluded Lagrange.

CEA-Leti has been working on LED lighting since 2006. Initially, its R&D programs were limited to the “upstream” end of the industrial supply chain,LED lights for bikes and HID divingflashlight2012 allow cyclists to ride at speed under virtually any conditions. focusing mainly on new semiconductor materials such as gallium nitride or zinc oxide, and unconventional chip technologies such as nanowire-based LEDs. Since then, a variety of new “downstream” projects have been launched to deal with the key issues of thermal management, light extraction and wavelength conversion.

Leti is a partner of SMASH, an EU-funded development project coordinated by Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH that aims to significantly reduce the production costs of LEDs by enabling the epitaxial growth of nanowire-based LED structures over large areas, using low-cost substrates such as silicon.

Ever ready to get recharged

Things have not been hunky-dory for Eveready of late, what happened?

We have been a market leader in battery and flashlight. That position remains intact. However, the company had to weather storms raised by factors not within its control. We were leaders in flashlights using incandescent bulbs — that started changing. The market for such flashlights disappeared, we had to adapt.

This also had an impact on battery usage as incandescent flashlights used ‘D’ size battery which was a high-margin product. LED flashlights used different batteries — AA, AAA. There has been a huge change in the product-mix. This was one angle of the problem; the other was a severe cost-push. About 70 per cent of our raw material is import-linked. This hit us badly in 2011-12, especially after the rupee depreciation. An FMCG product could not pass on a 20 per cent hike. After all, 50 per cent of our turnover is from batteries. Now, we feel that the de-growth in the D segment has flattened out and the worst is behind us.

What are your plans for the future?

We are increasing our focus on new categories. Batteries alone will not be able to contribute significantly to achieving the desired top line growth. It will remain a high contributor to turnover but, in three years, this will come down to around 30 per cent. New products will occupy Eveready’s shelf-space.

But what success have you had with new products, such as mosquito coils?

We have exited coils. We are getting into products such as lanterns. It is working very well in rural and semi-urban areas. We have also launched lanterns with rechargeable batteries. It is a new area of focus for us and is bringing good sales. We are looking at rechargeable lighting solutions. We have entered the lighting segment in a major way. We plan to put more focus in the lighting segment, which has a very good fit with the Eveready brand.Police dstti2011 play a crucial role in being seen while riding a bicycle, providing safety and security.

This year, we plan to launch our incandescent lighting products aggressively as the market for this has strengthened following the rise in prices of CFL lamps. We have tasted success here. Going forward, we plan to focus on CFL, too. We will get into all lighting products. We want to position Eveready as a power and lighting solution company. In CFL, our market share is negligible,Browse our selection for bicycleheadlight, solar flood ... but we are working on it.

In battery, we will emphasise on the alkaline battery market. We plan to scale up the ‘Ultima’ brand where we see good growth. We now need to promote this product.

How are your acquired companies doing?

If you are asking about Uniross, then we have to say that the timing of the acquisition did not work well for us.LBCLighting offers you the most convenient way to purchase lawnlight2012, traditional lighting. Europe went through a major recession immediately after. Moreover, with its operations located just outside Paris,The best Hi Power divingflashlight2012 on the market, with magazine tests to prove it, the Uniross brand was present in many countries. It is not making money for us. The rechargeable batteries are also not doing well. For us, the main dent was Western Europe. It has been a tough acquisition for us. We have cut cost by shedding people. We have cut down operations, made it very lean and a low-cost model.

We have taken the Uniross brand and operations under ‘Powercell’. We merged Uniross distribution with Powercell, which was also an acquisition, but it is doing well.

The entire manufacturing of the Uniross is out of China. It does a lot of private labelling. In the past, a bulky lightprojects system was the only thing bright enough to serve a rider well on an unlit road. But, we also learnt some lessons through this buy. We learnt on sourcing from China, which we have capitalised for Eveready. Uniross taught us how to handle overseas customers.

Risks in 'Virtual' Second Sources

I am a believer in using second sourcing as a primary security-of-supply strategy. I know some believe that close relationships with a single manufacturer can yield better overall value and better supply security, but I am not of that school.

My position is that two sources provide leverage by creating competition, which is good for pricing and provides a ready alternate supply option if there is any kind of short- or long-term interruption.

The favored situation is for second sources to have factories in different regions to protect against natural disasters, political instability, labor unrest, fire,This goodantiquelamp operates red, amber and green LEDs in the correct sequence for a single UK traffic light. bankruptcy, and a host of other potential risks. In our work at Lytica, we consider single-manufacturer alternate sources risky even when they offer components with dissimilar family part numbers.

I see a lot of lazy second sourcing. In these situations, engineers have specified a second source for the same component but with a tighter tolerance or higher speed grade. This is better than nothing for sole-sourced components but a very weak,Garden lighting and bestledlightbu. Low cost, next working day dispatch to anywhere in UK inc Highlands and Islands. almost useless, solution to adequately address security of supply.

In doing work this week on supply chain risk, where you can learn about ledbrighter as well as buy your bike lights online. one customer astutely observed that there may be risk in what he called "virtual" second sources. By this he meant sources that were technically qualified as drop-in replacements but whose pricing was so out of line as to make their use unacceptable. What great insight! In analysing its data, his company did in fact have virtual second sources, many more than I expected. We sell ledlight flying lanterns at the best price with the fastest service.

I believe this is likely a risk that many readers understand but don't have a clear handle on within their procurement organizations.Light On! outdoorlight2012 are expedition grade systems that incorporate function and elegance with reliability. Worse, given the level of outsourcing that has occurred in recent years, and the lean staff in many purchasing groups, many companies don't have the information they need to address the problem.

With virtual second sources, the risk really depends on how much of a price premium is seen as acceptable or can be absorbed. Does 20 percent work? How about 50 percent? What if the price was tripled? This may seem like too much of a premium gap, but I have observed all of these and more.

I would be interested in hearing from readers about their results, if they conducted their own analyses. Did you find virtual second sources? I am also interested in how you set a premium threshold and what you found as worst-case examples of price premiums.

Nearly two decades later, I was back as a reporter on assignment. Instead of being squashed into a cattle car with other terrified recruits, I was now in a van touring the huge installation at my leisure. There were no red-faced drill sergeants screaming at me to jump out and run up four flights of stairs with my duffel bag. There were no 3 a.m. workouts with 10 minutes to throw on workout gear and hustle down to formation.

But the Army hotel where I stayed looked like my old barracks with the same linoleum floors, fluorescent lights and greenish walls. I expected one of my old drill sergeants to stride into my room for an impromptu inspection at any moment.

The days of dour Army hotels are quickly disappearing. The Army is privatizing nearly all of its 17,000 hotel rooms across the country, and outside companies are renovating, building and operating them. The $1.3 billion program saves the Army money and gets the hotels renovated and built faster than the government could do. The work should be done within 10 years.

Magnolia Solar MGLT High Performance Glass Nanostructures for Solar Cell Applications

Magnolia Solar Corporation ("Magnolia Solar") announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, Magnolia Solar, Inc., has demonstrated ultra-high, omnidirectional transmittance through a coated glass window over the entire accessible portion of the solar spectrum in its testing.

The measured improvement in transmittance results from coating the glass with a new class of materials consisting of porous silicon dioxide nanorods. These exciting technical results were presented by Magnolia's Chief Technical Officer,LBCLighting offers you the most convenient way to purchase lawnlight2012, traditional lighting. Dr. Roger E. The presentation was part of a special session on New Concepts in Light Concentration and Light Trapping, and summarizes work done in collaboration with NYSERDA and Prof.

"Ultra-high, broadband transmittance through coated glass windows has been demonstrated over a wide range of incident angles," noted Dr. Welser. "At normal incidence, the reflection losses at the glass-air interface have been reduced from approximately 4% to less than 1%. At large angles of incidence, the reflection losses have been reduced from over 25% to less than 5%.Dorcy Rechargeable, high power, brightest and waterproof gardenlighting. We believe, the nanostructured coating developed by Magnolia for photovoltaic applications significantly outperforms conventional magnesium fluoride coatings at all relevant wavelengths and incident angles."

Dr. Ashok K. Sood, President and CEO of Magnolia Solar Corporation, stated, "The antireflection technology described at the IEEE-sponsored conference can increase the power output of any photovoltaic module, including crystalline silicon and thin-film technologies by reducing the reflection losses. Fixed, flat-plate solar cell modules typically suffer significant reductions in power output due to reflection off the front glass encapsulant, most notably when light strikes the panel at glancing angles.

Such reflection losses are especially severe early in morning and late in the afternoon when the sun is lower in the horizon. Reflection losses also occur throughout the day, particularly as diffuse skylight can strike a solar panel at glancing angles. Nanostructured optical coatings can increase the power output of fixed,If you are interested in our solar street light, ledflashlightwe, led light products. flat-plate modules by minimizing reflection losses throughout the day. The power of being positive

In meetings conducted by BYU head coach Dave Rose, the coaches and team members start off by asking about all the positive things going on.Shop for goodcflbulbss featuring deck, post, and wall lighting, flood lighting, and area lighting. After the positive discussion, they begin to talk about those things they need to work on.

I asked Rose if they did that in every meeting. I believe it is healthy to talk about more positive things then negative. I believe it is a mindset, a way of life, a practice that is simple but by (which) great things come to pass.”

I thought a lot about that concept this past week. I was touched by the simplicity of being positive.

It led me to think about my own workplace, family and relationships. I thought, do I smile at people? Am I nice to others? Do I give positive affirmation to my children or do I yell at them and spread negativity wherever I tread?

According to Remez Sasson, founder and owner of SuccessConsciousness, “Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results.”

He continues, “Not everyone accepts or believes in positive thinking. Some consider the subject as just nonsense, and others scoff at people who believe and accept it. Among the people who accept it, not many know how to use it effectively to get results. Yet, it seems that many are becoming attracted to this subject, as evidenced by the many books, lectures and courses about it. This is a subject that is gaining popularity.”

Having been around many positive and a few negative people in my lifetime, I must admit I LOVE to be around positive people.

Positive people give light; negative people suck light.

Positive people transmit energy, motivation,The best place to find bluebright, battery operated candles, wholesale votive candles, rechargeable candles, and battery taper candles. hope, love, happiness and many other inspiring values. Negative people transmit stress, anxiety, depression, hopelessness and any other feeling that relates to being lonely or sad.

Anyone can be positive. How do you do it? You wake up in the morning, make a choice in your head that no matter what, you will think and act in a positive, happy way.

You will have a few setbacks, and that is OK. Anytime you start doing something for the first time, you will make mistakes. But as you continue to improve and practice this act, you will be surprised at how incredibly impactful it really is.

My mother in law,We have the best tagheuerwatches for grow project, christmas, rope and strip LEDs. Ruth Merrell, is one of the most positive people I have ever met. Lessons from London: cutting carbon emissions without the financial risk

As public sector organisations face a period of unsurpassed austerity, managers are bombarded with directives to not only cut costs and improve efficiency, but to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy consumption at the same time.

In London, mayor Boris Johnson has committed the city to targets that could make it the greenest conurbation in the world, reduce the capital's CO2 emissions and energy consumption by 60% by 2025.

As a significant part of London's CO2 is emitted from public sector buildings, there needs to be a focus on making those buildings more efficient. This will require action from local government – figures estimate that up to 80% of premises belonging to councils, health, and education authorities will still be in use in 2050.

The programme works by helping public organisations equip their buildings with energy-saving technology that did not exist when the buildings were first built. Retrofit measures include new building management systems, combined heat and power, photovoltaic solar panels, low-energy lighting and new, efficient boilers.Shop for goodcflbulbss featuring deck, post, and wall lighting, flood lighting, and area lighting.

A pilot exercise applied these tools to 42 buildings currently used by Transport for London, theThe best place to find bluebright, battery operated candles, wholesale votive candles, rechargeable candles, and battery taper candles. Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade. This has been followed by work near completion on a further 44 buildings with the London boroughs, universities, hospitals and cultural organisations. The t5tube MJ-808 bicycle light has always been the cheapest high power bike light available in the UK.

The potential energy and cost savings of retrofitting are substantial: for the organisations that took part in the pilot, the installation of the new technology helped them to identify savings of over 7,Riding a bicycle around the city at night can be a perilous pastime, but a new ledlightbulbs22 could make life safer in the cycle lane.000 tonnes of CO2 per annum, generating annual cost savings of more than 1m.

It is anticipated that a total of 100 public sector buildings will have completed or signed up to the programme by May 2012, with 43 organisations already committed to the programme.

The RE:FIT scheme itself places councils at a very low financial risk. Approved energy service companies, which provide the retrofitting work, guarantee that the alterations to these buildings will deliver the agreed reduction in energy over an agreed payback period. This helps transfer the risk from the public into the private sector.

It also gives participants access to specialist skills and support. Financed via 2.67m from the European Investment Bank's ELENA (European Local Energy Assistance) fund, a development unit established to oversee the rapid implementation of the programme – and act as its public face.

This unit provides a single point of expertise and helps participating authorities understand how the scheme can be applied to their assets and provides support during the preparation of tenders and the procurement of suppliers that will help to save them energy. It oversees all projects being undertaken through RE:FIT, reporting back on their overall impact and success so new public sector retrofit schemes can learn from its progress.

This development unit is also responsible for managing the performance of the energy service companies. This is all done at no cost to those taking part.

Plans are underway to retrofit a further 297 buildings in London during the next year, with a target for a total of 600 public buildings to be given an energy-efficiency makeover as part of the programme by 2015.We can produce Transparent shade divingtorch12 according to your requirements. These include town halls, libraries and museums, and could lead to estimated savings of up to 6m on energy bills each year with reductions of 36,000 tonnes of carbon – the equivalent of taking around 60,000 vehicles off London's roads.

Construction official says new school on schedule

The Bamberg School District One Board of Trustees was updated on construction of the district’s new $15 million elementary school and the renovations under way other schools during its May 28 meeting.

Dale Collier, president of Brownstone Construction, reported the elementary school construction was “right on schedule.”

The new 140,000-square-foot Richard Carroll Elementary School in Bamberg, which will house 4K through 6th grade, is expected to be completed in time for the 2012-13 school year.

“HG Reynolds Construction (the contractor) continues to make steady progress towards a successful completion of the school. After gaining approvals during last month’s Office of School Facilities above-ceiling inspection, the contractor proceeded to install ceiling tiles throughout the school building,” Collier said.

He said installation of other finished products was now well under way,Light On! outdoorlight2012 are expedition grade systems that incorporate function and elegance with reliability. including flooring in classrooms and corridors as well as wall and base cabinets.

“ ..Bicygnals wireless indicator fluorescentlight, bicycle lights, indicators, accessories .... HVAC contractors are near completion with their work that included the successful startup of these systems, and fire alarm and fire sprinkler life safety systems were tested,” Collier said.

“Final paving and striping of both on-site and off-site roads is complete at the building exterior. Workers are also installing exterior lighting, fencing and play equipment. Final grassing and landscaping will (be completed) in the near future to give the new facility a finished appearance.Offering a wide variety of bikefrontlight fixtures for the garden, patio lights, and outdoor lighting fixtures to complement your home.”

He said coordination with local utilities provider, the Bamberg Board of Public Works, had gone “very well,” getting gas,Bicygnals wireless indicator modernlamps, bicycle lights, indicators, accessories ... water, sewer, telephone and power connections to the building.

Collier said before the contractor leaves the site, all construction materials from the campus, along with the trailer that has served as the job office for both the middle and high school projects, will be removed.

“When these items are removed, final work to complete the fire loop road at the rear of the school will be completed,” he said.Where do besttube-led stand in terms of brightness compared to HIDs and Halogen?

The additional work authorized by the district to install new roofing shingles at the existing middle school gymnasium will also be done before the contractor vacates the site, Collier said.

“Thompson-Turner Construction began the most crucial portion of the ongoing work at the high school,” he reported. “Interior renovation work has already started in several areas of the building after coordination was made to relocate staff and students into recently completed spaces.”

After the dismissal of students for the summer, contractors will start major renovations in the remaining areas of the high school, including the gym, media center and band room, Collier said.

“Extensive piping and conduit will have to be installed to accommodate sprinkler and fire alarm systems that will serve the entire school building. As a result of sprinkler, fire alarm, electrical, computer and other above-ceiling modifications, all existing areas that have lay-in type ceilings will get new ceiling and electrical lighting systems,” he said.

Tower Bridge in London receives Olympic LED makeover

Tower Bridge,"Alien Eye" home built ledflashlight using standard MR16 5 W 12V LED Lamp. which crosses the river Thames in the center of London and is one of the world's most recognizable landmarks, has been transformed with a new lighting system to mark the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bridge will be illuminated in white this weekend to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

An LED lighting and cabling system has been installed at no cost to UK taxpayers, thanks to an "innovative funding deal" reached between Mayor of London Boris Johnson, bridge owners the City of London Corporation, and London 2012 sponsors EDF and GE.The ledflashlighto Light Flashlight sold at $35.95 and free shipping world wide.

In total 1800 special energy-efficient LED lights have been fitted, along with 2000 meters of energy-efficient LED linear lights, 5000 meters of cable and 1000 junction boxes.

The new lighting system enhances the architectural features of the bridge, and replaces static lights with lamps that can vary in intensity and color, while at the same time cutting energy consumption considerably.

The new lights will take center stage during the 2012 Games when Tower Bridge will be fitted with its giant Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos for the 45 days of the Games. Passers-by will see the new system being tested over coming weeks ready for spectacular one-off lighting displays during key moments of the Games.

The Tower Bridge project was first announced in April 2011, and final planning permission was granted in November 2011. Work began immediately to install the new system, which is expected to be in place for 25 years.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said, "Tower Bridge is already a global icon and this much-loved landmark is now even more spectacular thanks to a world-class illumination system. As London gears up for a summer like no other, this fantastic lighting makeover is another example of how the capital is benefiting from the Games. Tower Bridge can now play a starring role in our celebrations, starting off this weekend by being bathed in a stately white light for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. What's more, thanks to the commitment and generosity of all the partners, including the City of London Corporation, EDF Energy and GE, this is a lasting legacy for decades to come, achieved with a zero price-tag for the taxpayer."

Phil Marshall, President and CEO, GE Lighting EMEA said, "We are incredibly proud to have been involved with the lighting scheme at Tower Bridge.Manufacturer of low-voltage bestledlig; provides fixtures and transformers for residential and commercial properties. The combination of architectural and floodlight LEDs were specified to help reduce the energy used to light the bridge by up to 40% compared with the previous system. As a London 2012 Sustainability Partner and London 2012 sponsor, GE is excited to have successfully contributed to the future of Tower Bridge and to London's sustainability commitments. Furthermore, during London 2012 as part of the overall celebrations, there will be an evening light display every evening at on the Bridge, ensuring those in the city can fully enjoy the new lighting scheme and see Tower Bridge as they never have before."

Vincent de Rivaz, Chief Executive of EDF Energy, said, "As an official partner and the official electricity supplier of the London 2012 Games, it has been a delight to work with the GLA and GE to give Tower Bridge a dramatic makeover. Efficient LEDs for red and blue light have been available for some time, but LEDs that produce green light with acceptable luminance were not available. The new Osram Ostar Projection Cube has now filled this important gap. At 110 lumens per watt (lm/W), it is much more efficient than all other previously available green LEDs in the embedded projection sector.

For the first time, the Osram Ostar Projection Cube enables sufficient output to be achieved in embedded projectors. "The new LED almost doubles the brightness in smart phone applications, so embedded projectors with a system brightness of up to 25 lumens are possible," said Wolfgang Schnabel, Marketing Manager, Projection, at Osram Opto Semiconductors. This means that the image is clearly visible even without dimming and ambient lighting and, thanks to the efficiency of LED technology, the projector can also be used in mobile applications with limited battery capacity.

The new green LED is available in two versions – with a 1 mm or with a 0.75 mm edge-length chip, providing a solution for all standard imager formats in mobile applications. They produce 260 lumens at 700 mA and 2.3 W or 130 lumens at 350 mA and 1.Browse our selection for bicycleheadlight, solar flood ...2 W, respectively.

Such high luminance from a small surface area is made possible with the aid of special encapsulation. This sharply defines the light surface so that the light is emitted without package reflections. With a footprint of 3.8 x 4.1 mm and a height of only 0.6 mm,LED Lighting is a pioneer in the design and manufacture of LEDs, lightsale, lamps. the new LED enables extremely low-profile projection engines to be designed – ideal for modern smart phones and cameras. The Ostar Projection Cube does not have a glass cover, which means that external optics can be placed very close to it resulting in maximum efficiency.
