Bikes light up the night at Capital

Hundreds of wheels lit up the night as cyclists rode around Ottawa for the annual Tour la Nuit on Saturday.

The parade of bells, lights and music was part of Capital Vélo Fest, an annual festival put on to promote all things bicycle in Ottawa.

“We are trying to inspire people of all ages to ride their bicycle more often,” said Dick Louch,Marking machines and contemporarylampses for permanent part marking and product traceability. the festival’s organizer.

Despite an onslaught of rain just before the ride began, more than 125 cyclists showed up to City Hall for this year’s Tour la Nuit. From there,China solargardenlighting manufacturer supply elevator light curtain, the brave riders biked 22 km along the Rideau Canal, through the Experimental Farm and back.

The ride attracted bicycles of all shapes and sizes, from sleek racers to tandems, recumbent bikes to choppers.

Many participants had flashing lights attached to their wheels.

“When they ride it creates this little band of colour in their wheel,” Louch explained. “You have all these bikes lit up like neon lights going through the Experimental Farm. It looks awesome.”

Other riders took the decorations to a whole other level.

Celia McInnis always has lights on the basket of her orange cargo bike, but added dozens of LED Christmas lights for the ride. She also secured two large light posts, recycled from a Christmas display, to the back of her ride.“I like to be seen,” McInnis said.

Charles Akben-Marchand, a veteran of Tour la Nuit, affixed 240 purple and white LED lights to his bike for the evening, powering them with a 12 volt battery.

“(Tour la Nuit) promotes cycling in a fun way,” Akben-Marchand said.

The event is also a fundraiser for The Kidney Foundation, an important cause for Bettina Iraci and her son Dawson Corbett.

Corbett, 13, was born with kidney problems. Iraci donated a kidney to him when he was 4, but Corbett’s now in need of another and is on the transplant list.

Because Corbett’s kidney is in his abdomen, the teen can’t play many traditional sports.

“Biking is one of the things he can do sports wise,” Iraci explained.

And it’s a sport he loves. Corbett wore his a signed Canadian cycling team jersey to the ride, but covered it with a rain coat so the showers wouldn’t cause the dozens of signatures to run.

Tour la Nuit wasn’t Capital Vélo Fest’s only event. Earlier in the day, Festival Plaza at Ottawa’s City Hall was transformed into a cyclist’s heaven.

Four men and women perched on their bicycles wielded long mallets in a bike polo match at one end of the plaza, while nearby an area was being set up for bike jousting, as 30 different clubs and vendors hawked their wares.

Penguins Director of Events Presentation Billy Warham is the person responsible for controlling the light.

“It’s really as simple as when we score a goal, you push the button that says,Commercial parkingsystem for your multi-housing laundry facilities from Aulaundry. 'hockey score' and instantly the lights go red on the top of the building,” said Warham.

Warham said there is a slight trick as to when to turn on the lights after a goal since the fans watching the game at the big screen are on a seven-second delay, so he is sure to take a look outside and wait for fans to react before sending the signal.

“We want to make sure that we trigger it after they know we scored a goal. We don’t want to give it away five or eight seconds prior to them knowing. So it’s all about the viewing experience for them out there,” said Warham.

7/7 bomber’s widow linked to al-Qaeda is sought in Somalia

KENYAN police say that pregnant British woman Samantha Lewthwaite, the widow of 7 July, 2005 bomber Jermaine Lindsay, has fled the country for Somalia, where she is believed to have connections to an al-Qaeda-linked militia.

A senior police official said Lewthwaite, 28, and originally from Aylesbury, is part of a group of British citizens and other foreign nationals who arrived in Kenya last year to plan a bomb attack on the Kenyan coast over Christmas and New Year. Lewthwaite was in charge of finances for the planned attack,Browse through our impressive range of bicyclefrontlight and buy online now. he said.

Officials believe Lewthwaite, a mother of three, has fled to Somalia, the police official said. She is connected to the aide of East Africa’s top al-Qaeda operative. Both men were killed in Somalia last year and she is on the run.

The group was allegedly collaborating with Kenyans sympathetic to the al-Qaeda-linked Somali militant group al-Shabaab, the official said.

Kenya blames al-Shabaab for cross-border attacks in which at least ten Kenyans and four Europeans were kidnapped.

Earlier this year al-Qaeda announced it had merged with al-Shabaab, Somalia’s most dangerous militant group.

Lewthwaite is the widow of Jermaine Lindsay, one of four men who set off bombs on a bus and Tube trains in London in 2005. Some 52 people died and more than 700 were wounded.

The police official said Anti-Terrorism Police Unit officers suspect Lewthwaite was working with Musa Hussein Abdi, the Kenyan shot dead alongside al-Qaeda boss Fazul Abdullah Mohammed in Somalia last June.

Anti-terrorist police found a British woman – believed to be Lewthwaite – in Abdi’s house on 20 December but let her go after being fooled by the fake South African passport she carried in the name of Rachel Faye Webb. Later that day, the officers led Grant to Abdi’s nearby house, where they found his widow and a British woman.

Police suspect that Lewthwaite rented two houses in upmarket areas in Mombasa in order to assemble a bomb. Police believe al-Shabaab still intends to launch a terrorist attack in Kenya.

The official said Lewthwaite is pregnant and married to a Kenyan who has fled the country.

Mohammed – the al-Qaeda mastermind behind the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania – topped the FBI’s most wanted list for 13 years before his death last year.

He was also linked to the 2002 bombing of a tourist hotel at the Kenyan coast and a near-simultaneous attempt to bring down an Israeli airliner.
