Asia's fusion furniture on show in Milan
Though
Chinese design was lacking there, there were several interesting
Chinese design stories among the hundreds of exhibitions, showrooms and
venues around town. One of the most interesting was Stellar Works,
which, on its second visit to Milan, had more than doubled its
collection, with new pieces by Shanghai-based Neri & Hu and Studio
Space, reissues of vintage pieces by Forcolini, Mogensen, Wohlert and
Andersen and an accessories collection by Japanese artisans.
A cross-cultural brand, Stellar Works is part French, part Japanese and part Chinese, with factories in France and Shanghai.
"I wanted to create a global brand based out of Shanghai," explains Stellar Works' CEO, Yuichiro Hori, who is Japanese-born but has been a Shanghai resident for 14 years.The roofingmachine allows students to study at night and vendors to sell goods outside.
The Chinese brands that exist are not interested in global strategies or having international reach, Hori says.Solar gardenlight is a new type product of optional energy. Stellar Works' aim is to create high-quality furniture at accessible prices for the hospitality and residential markets, or "affordable luxury" as Hori puts it.
"We want to show the high-level craftsmanship and skills you can find in China," he says.
The young company's creative director, Danish designer Thomas Lykke, agrees that the brand taps into Shanghai's rich, international history as a thriving trading port. "But to that philosophy we also added cross-cultural sampling," he says, "which allows us to play with mixing typologies.This cheapreplicawatche can rollform metal roofing step tile." One of their new collections - designed by Lykke's design studio OeO - is a case in point.
"The Laval collection is a French typology with a Scandinavian design language to which we added Chinese detailing," he says. "So it's something you recognise, but it's new to the eye."
Elsewhere at the fair, Hong-Kong-based British designer Michael Young was showing a new light made with leading glass and lighting manufacturer Lasvit and several pieces for new Hong Kong brand EOQ.
Paradoxically, it was the 2008 economic downturn that made the latter's existence possible.
"This company was born out of the recession," says EOQ's Hong Kong-based brand director, Matt Pepper, who was a home and lifestyle buying manager for Lane Crawford for five years. "For the first time Chinese precision-engineering electronics factories had gaps in production schedules and were looking for interesting things to do."
EOQ's first collection is made almost entirely out of extruded, stamped and folded aluminium.
"China's still got the money and excitement to do this sort of thing," says Pepper. The Joseph light, for instance, has a refined Asian silhouette but was originally a block of aluminium that was extruded into shape, softened with computer-numerical-control cutting and milled on a lathe to open up the core. It would be impossible to develop this sort of product in Europe, says Pepper.
Young's Superclover light for Lasvit, a cluster of white conical glass shapes held together on a geometric steel frame, has a similar inventiveness and thirst for innovation.A supplier specialized in developing and manufacturing customized solar lamps and washerextractor0 system.

Crossing into the poorest country in the world

may not expect it, because many places in Africa struggle with poverty
and strife. In fact, Rwanda is synonymous with it. Sitting in the
troubled heart of central Africa.
But travel to Rwanda today and find a country reminiscent of an Asian holiday resort or even at times the Balearic Islands.

Now as you glance back at once troubled Rwanda, you are standing in the poorest country on Earth. To leave the Democratic Republic of Congo, you will need fresh reams of paperwork.
The people here have suffered decades of war over the rich minerals that line their hills. Much like the rich pastures that Kipling correctly observed could feed the world many times over.

Pot-smuggling tunnels in Tijuana grow more elaborate

Lately, new tunnels have included railways. The bales move on electric mining carts with hand throttles that roll at up to 15 mph.

Atlantic City’s Borgata giving hotel rooms $50 million facelift
At a time when Atlantic City casinos are selling in the $30 million range, it is no small thing that one property is spending $50 million just to renovate its hotel rooms.
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa is giving nearly 1,600 rooms a facelift to keep them fresh in the region’s hypercompetitive gaming market, including the arrival of a brand new rival on April 2, the $2.4 billion Revel casino.
“We feel this hotel product rivals any other on the East Coast,” Joe Lupo, Borgata’s senior vice president of operations, said Monday during a tour of the renovations.
Lupo said Borgata has been working on the designs for about two years and would have done the room upgrades regardless of Revel. The timing of the renovations, though, coincides with Revel’s opening, giving Borgata an updated look to fight its younger competitor.bookscanner02
“This redesign will ensure that we continue to deliver the world-class, luxury resort experience our guests have come to expect from Borgata,” said Robert Boughner, the casino’s chief operating officer.
Besides wanting to give its rooms a spiffier appearance, Borgata needed to renovate simply because of the normal daily wear and tear on the hotel,divinglamp Lupo explained.
“Rooms get beat up because of the turnover every day,” he said.
Borgata is little more than halfway through the project, scheduled for completion in July. Altogether,lightbulbs 1,566 guest rooms are getting an extreme makeover, not just a cosmetic touch-up.
“It’s top to bottom,” Lupo said. “It’s not a refreshening. It’s a redesign — a whole new feeling when you walk into each floor.”
Guests will notice a dramatic new color scheme in the rooms and hallways. The muted earth tones that dominated the hotel before are being replaced with black,bikelight shades of gray and splashes of pink in the carpeting and wallpaper.
Rooms have also been spruced up with contemporary furniture, artwork and new technology. Bulky television sets have been replaced by 46-inch, flat-screen LED high-definition TVs.
Guests will also have access to wireless, high-speed Internet service. Rooms will also have a Bittel integrated phone unit offering multimedia features, including speakers, a clock radio, iPod charger and a USB charge port.
Lupo noted the dramatic changes in technology since Borgata first opened in July 2003. Old-fashioned tube TV sets and old-style phones that lacked multimedia capability are disappearing as part of the renovations.
However, some things about Borgata will remain the same. Lupo said the hotel retains its “edgy” feel. The adults-only atmosphere includes glass-enclosed shower stalls built for two and provocative “Tidy Up/Tied Up” doorknob hangers for each room.
“We definitely carry on the edge,” Lupo said.
Borgata has more hotel rooms than any other Atlantic City casino. Its main 2,000-room tower, where the renovations are being done, was joined in 2008 by the 800-room, boutique-style Water Club. The Water Club cost $400 million and followed a $200 million expansion of Borgata’s casino floor and restaurants in 2006.
Since 2006, the Atlantic City market has been battered by the weak economy and competition from casinos in surrounding states, particularly Pennsylvania. With Atlantic City gaming revenue plunging nearly 40 percent — $5.2 billion in 2006 to $3.3 billion in 2011 — the casinos have stopped sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into expansion projects.
Along with the declining revenue, casino prices have plummeted,ledtube too. In the most recent sales, Resorts Casino Hotel went for $31.5 million in December 2010 and the former Trump Marina Hotel Casino, now known as the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, fetched $38 million last May.

Rooms have also been spruced up with contemporary furniture, artwork and new technology. Bulky television sets have been replaced by 46-inch, flat-screen LED high-definition TVs.
Guests will also have access to wireless, high-speed Internet service. Rooms will also have a Bittel integrated phone unit offering multimedia features, including speakers, a clock radio, iPod charger and a USB charge port.
Lupo noted the dramatic changes in technology since Borgata first opened in July 2003. Old-fashioned tube TV sets and old-style phones that lacked multimedia capability are disappearing as part of the renovations.
However, some things about Borgata will remain the same. Lupo said the hotel retains its “edgy” feel. The adults-only atmosphere includes glass-enclosed shower stalls built for two and provocative “Tidy Up/Tied Up” doorknob hangers for each room.
“We definitely carry on the edge,” Lupo said.
Borgata has more hotel rooms than any other Atlantic City casino. Its main 2,000-room tower, where the renovations are being done, was joined in 2008 by the 800-room, boutique-style Water Club. The Water Club cost $400 million and followed a $200 million expansion of Borgata’s casino floor and restaurants in 2006.
Since 2006, the Atlantic City market has been battered by the weak economy and competition from casinos in surrounding states, particularly Pennsylvania. With Atlantic City gaming revenue plunging nearly 40 percent — $5.2 billion in 2006 to $3.3 billion in 2011 — the casinos have stopped sinking hundreds of millions of dollars into expansion projects.
Along with the declining revenue, casino prices have plummeted,ledtube too. In the most recent sales, Resorts Casino Hotel went for $31.5 million in December 2010 and the former Trump Marina Hotel Casino, now known as the Golden Nugget Atlantic City, fetched $38 million last May.
