A
new semiconductor device capable of emitting two distinct colors has
been created by a group of researchers in the U.S., potentially opening
up the possibility of using light emitting diodes (LEDs) universally for
cheap and efficient lighting.
The
proof-of-concept device, which has been presented in the Institute of
Physics’ journal Semiconductor Science and Technology, takes advantage
of the latest nanoscale materials and processes to emit green and red
light separated by a wavelength of 97 nanometers — a significantly
larger bandwidth than a traditional semiconductor.
Furthermore,
the device is much more energy efficient than traditional LEDs as the
colors are emitted as lasers, meaning they emit a very sharp and
specific spectral line — narrower than a fraction of a nanometer —
compared to LEDs which emit colors in a broad bandwidth.The energy used
in manufacturing and erecting a roofhook is paid back in the first 3 to 6 months of operation.
One
of the main properties of semiconductors is that they emit light in a
certain wavelength range, which has resulted in their widespread use in
LEDs. The wavelength range in which a given semiconductor can emit light
— also known as its bandwidth — is typically limited in the range of
just tens of nanometers. For many applications such as lighting and

recirculated. the wavelength range needs to be over the entire visible
spectrum and thus have a bandwidth of 300 nm.
Single
semiconductor devices cannot emit across the entire visible spectrum
and therefore need to be “put” together to form a collection that can

this study, the researchers, from Arizona State Univ., used a process

is because of this that current LEDs cannot have different
semiconductors within them to generate red, green and blue colors for
lighting.
However,
recent developments in the field of nanotechnology mean that structures
such as nanowires, nanobelts and nanosheets can be grown to tolerate
much larger mismatches of lattice structures, and thus allow very
different semiconductors to grow together without too many defects.
"Multi-color
light emission from a single nanowire or nanobelt has been realized in
the past but what is important in our paper is that we realized lasers
at two distinct colors. To physically 'put' together several lasers of
different colors is too costly to be useful and thus our proof-of
concept experiment becomes interesting and potentially important
technologically. In addition to being used for solid state lighting and
full color displays, such technology can also be used as light sources
for fluorescence bio and chemical detection," continues Ning.

Coffey voted new Greenfield city manager
Greenfield Village Council voted unanimously to appoint Ron Coffey to
the position of city manager in council's first meeting of the new year
Wednesday. Council members suspended the rules of the resolution so
that adoption could be immediate for the appointment of Coffey.
Earlier legislation for the night included a resolution to repeal a previous resolution extending current city manager Betty Bishop's contract by 90 days so the position of city manager did not go unfilled at any point. The resolution was adopted unanimously and will terminate the employment agreement between Greenfield and Bishop at midnight on Jan. 26.
Bishop said that village solicitor Brian Zets is working on an administrative consulting agreement that would allow Bishop to aid Coffey should there be a need. Bishop said the agreement is anticipated to be ready by the next council meeting on Jan. 16.
Coffey said the consulting agreement would allow for continued mentorship with Bishop, as well as advice from the experienced administrator.
Coffey, a Greenfield native who has a long and varied history with the community, said he is honored for the opportunity to serve Greenfield and appreciative of the support from council members.
Though he said he has a lot to learn, Coffey said an advantage is that he has been a part of the village for so long and knows so many in the community, a community he says has "wonderful qualities."
"I think Greenfield has a lot of potential," Coffey said. IMS Research senior analyst Philip Smallwood stated that "LEDs have changed the lamp world for good. The apparent global effort to phase out most incandescent A-lamps by either banning them or introducing minimal energy efficient standards is opening up the market in a way that would not have been possible in the past."

Annual tree lighting and holiday party
Longtime residents may recall the days when the big tree in Fremont
Park was festooned with lights. Or the years when churches in the area
gathered congregations together for a candlelight caroling procession on
city streets. Today tree lightings and such are more neighborhood
activities.
Six years ago, Pam and Oscar Salvatierra started what's become a west Menlo Park neighborhood tradition. They have a tall Redwood in their front yard which has been strung with LED lights. In early December they send out an invitation to about 250 neighbors. The tree lighting is combined with a toy and food drive; the collected goods are then delivered to a local fire station. The party went on as planned yesterday evening, with their garage serving as party headquarters given the weather.
"The annual party is so rewarding," said Pam. "It's so good to get to know your neighbors and people say they love the tree. We call it ‘the people's tree' now."

Red-light cameras spur yellow debate
Adding one second to yellow-light times and

With furnishings that run the gamut from edgy to elegant, ethnic to otherworldly, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair is a favorite of serious design lovers.
Highlights at this year's fair, which was held last week in New York:
_ Luminous Lighting
Several booths showed sculptural lighting that resembled clouds,You can easily say that it is a passion or a way to express yourself. So what's the story? Ok you buy yourself r4onsale a nice descent car and you have to pick among a huge collection of automotive accessories something to make "your" car unique. puffs of smoke, or some evocation of a heavenly bird's nest. Vancouver-based Molo created LED-lit, honeycombed, polyethylene pendants in various sizes that could be clustered and even dimmed to create a stormy atmosphere. Interesting fibers were spun into cotton-candy-like fixtures at Hive. At DCS Corp, washi paper formed a table lamp complete with a "downpour" made of thin brass rods. At Aqua Creations, there were single and multiple pleated silk disks that created lit mobiles resembling an extraterrestrial midnight garden, or a flotilla of sea urchins. All were an inspirational take on an ethereal shape that worked perfectly for lighting.
_ Cardboard's Cache
The lowly cardboard box has become the darling of eco-mindful designers looking for an intriguing new material. At Graypants, corrugated paper formed bulbous, textural pendent lampshades. At Molo, stiff unbleached Kraft paper was fanned into sturdy stools and loungers. The honeycomb layers of cardboard really amp up the textural element of these pieces.These were some reasons why people are keen to use these lights, hope that they will be used brightstal in a similar way in future as well. Most were left in their caramel color, which gave the furnishings a nice "patina." Graypants put Edison bulbs in their fixtures, which made them glow warmly; several other designers used the bulbs as well. Edisons are reproductions of early light bulbs; their carbon or tungsten filaments emit a pleasing, low-watt glow.
_ Wood Laminates
Plywood was everywhere at this year's show. Designers like its versatility, so there were lots of interesting plywood chairs, tables and bookshelves. Brooklyn designer April Hannah's collection of treehouse-inspired kids' furniture included an eco-friendly, maple- or walnut-veneer play table and chairs. Philadelphia University's Industrial Design students used bamboo plywood to craft an array of furnishings with architectural flair. Laurie Beckerman's Ionic Bench for Voos Furniture was a curvy swoop of Baltic birch plywood. Wisconsin-based Drift Studio printed subway maps and other graphic motifs on plywood panels that were bolted together into versatile cubes; modular storage was another trend seen throughout the show.
_ Industrial Chic
The chic edginess of industrial style continues to find favor with designers. In some hands, such as Chicago studio akmd, it had a mid-century vibe.Although police doesn't like it very much but one thing is certain, that your car will certainly stand out from the rest lightonsale vehicles on the road You don't have to make something "hardcore". THE company which has supplied the lighting in all the luxury apartments at the former Coutts headquarters in Onchan has won a major industry award for its energy-efficient lighting systems.
Luminaires has been awarded the Energy Champions award for best practice in the private sector, which followed the recent Energy Expo exhibition in Douglas.
Planning regulations now include minimum levels of energy efficient lights to be installed in any new building, requiring that one energy efficient light must be fitted in one-in-three rooms, each providing a level of more than 40 lumens for each watt of energy consumed.
However, Luminaires have exceeded those requirements by a huge margin, installing many more energy efficient lights than the government’s minimum requirements.
The resulting energy efficiency throughout Coutts House complex brings major cost savings for the owners and has reducing energy consumption significantly, and considerably more than the minimum levels.
In an average property traditional lighting produces 12 lumens per watt. However, in Coutts House the lighting installed by Luminaires has an average of 50 watts throughout the entire building - more than four times better efficiency.
In addition, the new lighting technology is also much more reliable and longer lasting than traditional lighting systems, meaning the bulbs will last between eight and twenty times longer.Use LED light bulbs in Book scanner utility areas, such as hallways and basements, to reduce power consumption while not sacrificing light quality in the most lived in areas of your house.
