In the prostrating heat wave of July, I met up with 19-year-old Ben Hirschfeld on the campus of Columbia University. A Hastings-on-Hudson resident and graduate of Hastings High School, Hirschfeld is studying economics this summer before the start of his sophomore year at Columbia. He already is four years into a practical working education in the household economies of developing countries. It has been enlightening.
Later this month, Ben will travel to San Francisco to receive a $36,000 award from the Helen Diller Family Foundation, a charitable organization that, since its founding 13 years ago by Northern California philanthropist Helen Diller, has given out more than $200 million to support education, the arts, medical research and development and enterprising Jewish teens like Ben who have shown “leadership, innovation and commitment to making the world a better place.”
In June, the teen was one of 10 youths from across the U.S., and the only New Yorker, to receive the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award. The model program that Ben founded helps repair the health and aids the educational and economic well-being of school-age children and their siblings and parents in remote regions and urban slums where electricity is scarce or absent and kerosene lamps provide meager household light to study by when darkness falls.
Ben first heard from his neighbor of the harmful health effects of the kerosene lamps used by many households in developing countries. “It’s the equivalent from a very young age of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day,” Ben told me in the air-conditioned comfort of a neon-lit campus snack bar. “I knew I had to do something.”
With a few friends, Ben first drew attention and donations to their new cause at a farmers market in his hometown. He started Lit!, whose mission is to replace kerosene lamps with solar-powered lanterns in students’ homes. His organization now is called Lit! Solar.
“A lot of youth organizations can get caught in the hurdles of becoming their own legal nonprofit entity,” he said. The founder of Lit!, though, asked Allyn’s Litworld to include his fledgling group under the established nonprofit’s umbrella.
“With us bringing light and them bringing literacy,High quality collection of highqualityparkinglotlighting and garden lighting. there’s a real synergy there,” he said. And the arrangement has allowed Lit! to focus on fundraising and projects in the field rather than the intricacies of the Internal Revenue Service code.
Lit!’s supplier is d.light design, a for-profit social enterprise in San Francisco that designs, manufactures and distributes several models of solar lanterns. The company operates an African office in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, a chief focus of Ben’s social enterprise.The leader in commercial solaroutdoorlights offering enhanced energy efficiency and innovative features. Lit! Solar also has distributed the LED lights in Haiti, Fiji and on Native American reservations, he said.

There the organization has worked with schools and its local partner, the Children of Kibera Foundation, to place the small but efficient solar lanterns in students’ homes.
“It costs us about $7 apiece on location in Kenya,” Ben said. “We buy from a distributor less than a kilometer away” from their operation in a slum that is larger than Central Park and the largest in all of Africa.
The solar study aids are not simple charitable handouts, however. Ben’s operation sustains itself through a revolving micro-finance fund. Kiberan families pay into it, usually in installments, to cover the costs of their lanterns. How car manufacturers are combating 'alarm fatigue'
Beeps,
chimes, bongs, these are the sounds of our modern world. But the
constant barrage of notifications and warnings are becoming such a
problem that researchers have coined a term for it: Alarm Fatigue.
Increasingly, people are becoming desensitised to alerts to the point of
ignoring them, and in the medical field it's costing patients their

Car supplier Continental, which designs many of these driver assist systems, has developed a way to help fight alarm fatigue in cars using facial recognition. And yes, even more flashing lights.
The company's Driver Focus concept uses an infrared camera on the top of the steering column that keeps a steady eye on the driver to see where they are looking and what they are paying attention to.
"It's illuminating your face with infrared LEDs so that it keeps the light consistent, whether you're driving at night or through a tunnel," Zach Bolton, the Continental engineer responsible for the Driver Focus concept told Wired. "It's taking in the shape of the eye sockets, nose and chin to see whether a driver is looking straight ahead at the road or to the left or the right or down -- somewhere other than the direction he needs to look.international supplies a full range of cylinder heated long lasting powerturbines."
When the camera detects that the driver is looking forward it can delay an alert from, say, a forward-collision warning system, figuring that the driver is paying attention and not just daydreaming about Olivia Munn. But the car industry isn't always efficient in adopting new safety technology, due in part to regulatory red tape. Desai said he expects the Driver Focus prototype will take at least two years of development time, which means we may not see it in production vehicles for another four years. Until then, you'll have to endure the din of driver assists warnings as the technology proliferates -- and ensure that your nurse is paying attention when you're in the hospital.

Though industrial design pervades our surroundings, automobile
styling may be its most hotly debated aspect.Draw any design you fancy
with a laser pointer – and the windpowergenerator will
do the rest. One of my favorite auto designs on the market right now is
the Audi A5 and S5 coupe. Even the Cabriolet doesn't lose any style by
losing the coupe's graceful roof. Its noted designer Walter de'Silva is
said to have called the A5 his all-time favorite design. For the 2013
model year, the A5 and S5 have seen some significant styling
improvements and technology upgrades.
A new hood and bumpers help to hone the already chiseled lines, complemented by new more slender headlights, new fog lights, and a reworked grille. New LED taillights on S5 are optional on A5. Inside, the instrument cluster has been revised, and a host of new color choices are available.
The Rocky Mountains were the perfect setting with lots of curvy roads to test the legendary grip of Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system. My first turn behind the wheel was in an A5 Coupe riding on 18-inch wheels and all-season tires. Returning to the A5 is Audi's excellent 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an impressive 211 horsepower and 258 lb.No wiring or electricity is required to install these Garden Creations solarsystem accent lights. ft. of torque. While a front-wheel-drive only A5 Cabriolet is available with a continuously variable transmission, optional Quattro is the way to go. All the coupes have Quattro standard.
A5s get either a six-speed manual transmission or eight-speed Tiptronic automatic. The A5 stayed completely composed from curve to curve, with a new electromechanical steering system delivering precise control. Quattro would not relinquish any grip, even on the base tires. The suspension exhibited excellent balance between delivering a smooth ride in the straight stretches, yet staying level in cornering.It is possible to take this a step further, and to also merge the automatic ledstriplightww and clothes dryer into a single device. Uphill segments were no problem thanks to the 2.0T's forced induction, and braking was executed confidently through perfectly firm pedal.Modern and panelmachine and lights to enhance your home.
Next we stepped up to an S5 Cabriolet to try its new supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 333 horsepower and 325 lb. ft. of torque. We've been hearing for years that four-cylinders will replace the sixes, and sixes the eights. That day has come. The V-6 in the S5 clocks zero to sixty miles per hour in 4.9 seconds,Among the modern home accessories and decoration, the effect of curvingmachineqm is also growing. which is the same as the V-8 it replaces, and gets better fuel mileage while doing it. The test car had the automatic option for the S5, a seven-speed dual-clutch unit. It's well-matched to the S5's sporting character, with quicker shifts executed with a nice little rasp from the exhaust. With a stickier 19-inch summer-only tire, and the firmer S-line sport settings of the suspension, the S5 deftly took spirited mountain road driving to the next level.
The cabriolet has a few features and amenities of note. The top is well insulated and seals tight and quiet, with a heated glass rear window, making it perfectly viable for a year round daily driver. Even LED reading lamps are offered for the rear seat. With the comfort package, not only does it come with heated and ventilated seats, but climate control vents at neck level for those chilly top-down drives.
On the infotainment front, Audi has taken a giant leap by integrating Google Earth images into their navigation system, with an overlay of street maps, along with real time traffic information. Called Audi connect, it is also the first manufacturer integrated wi-fi hotspot in a vehicle, and is capable of supporting internet access for up to eight devices.

Street lights to go back on in Powys as low energy LED
Powys council is to spend 1.4m
installing LED bulbs in 14,000 lights, including the 4,770 it blacked out.
The council angered some communities when it turned off the lamps in 2008.
Jonathan Greatorex, who led a campaign against the blackout, said he was delighted the council had "finally seen the light".
Some lights initially switched off four years ago were turned back on at certain times following a review, while some individuals and town councils paid for their lamps to stay on.LED lamps are made that replace screw-in incandescent or ledtube light bulbs.
The authority said the aim of the new project was to reduce energy consumption, provide adequate lighting in sensitive areas and cut the cost of maintaining street lighting.
The proposal was approved by the council's cabinet on Tuesday.
A council report said: "Increasing concerns over the environmental impact and energy costs led to the decision to reduce the number of lamps being lit.
"Low energy LED lighting technology is evolving rapidly. The efficiency of the lanterns is improving and the unit cost is reducing.
"The project proposes to adopt this evolving technology as the main option to reduce the council's overall energy consumption whilst providing appropriate levels of street lighting to benefit Powys residents and road users."
The report said the project would be rolled out in areas "broadly in-line with the order of the original lighting project when lights were extinguished".
It added that the LED lights could be switched on either "on an all-night basis" or "on a part-night basis".

Bays Middle School will hold a "Green Pep Rally" on Friday at 9:30 a.m in the

Expected to attend the event will be officials, including Congresman Tim Bishop, Assemblyman Fred Thiele, and Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman.
Hampton Bays Middle School, which was selected from a field of 350 schools to receive the award from the United States Department of Education shares the honor with 78 other schools from across the county.
Hampton Bays Middle was nominated for the award for "comprehensively approach creating 'green' environments by reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education that prepares students with necessary 21st century skills."
Located at 70 Ponquogue Avenue, the Hampton Bays Middle School, which was designed by Patchogue Architect Roger Smith of BBS Architects and Engineers,Dependable and Energy Efficient, Samsung fluorescentlight is the modern, eco-friendly and convenient way to light your home. first opened it's doors in on Feb. 25, 2008 and since has received numerous green awards. Break out the Jubilee bunting
As well as 60 years of stability and continuity, it seems the Queen has another gift for each of us in Diamond Jubilee year. Eight new friends.
According to research carried out by community event co-ordinators Streets Alive, that’s the dividend we will all reap by attending a Jubilee street party or similar get-together over the holiday weekend of June 2 to 5.
Actually, the figure should be slightly qualified, in that the precise statistic is 7.9 – and the word “friends” is perhaps putting it a bit strongly, too.
“Neighbours you haven’t met before, whom you can now be friendly with; that would be a more accurate way of putting it,” says Chris Gittins, director of Streets Alive, which has established itself as the national authority on open-air knees-ups.
“That’s the lasting contribution which a street party makes, beyond the enjoyment of the actual day. It gives you the chance to meet people who live near you and who, like you, want to be friendly, but without being friends, and without having obligations beyond looking after your keys or watering your plants while you’re away.”
And it’s in pursuit of that peculiarly British form of semi-detached-ness that Streets Alive has compiled a whole website’s worth of advice, both for this summer’s would-be street party organisers, and for the local councils on whose patch those bashes will be held.
And there looks like being many thousands of them – even at this early stage, councils say they have already received 3,500 street party applications, a figure which means the Jubilee celebrations will dwarf those held to mark last year’s royal wedding.
Part of the boom, says Gittins, is down to an uncommon outbreak of common sense among our legislators.
“There was quite a lot of silliness last year, with councils charging for road closures and putting all sorts of bureaucratic obstacles in the way of people organising royal wedding parties,” he says. “Signs are, though, that most of those problems have now been sorted out.”
There are, of course, a few exceptions to the rule. If you want to hang up little rows of Union Jacks in Hampshire, you’ll still have to apply to the county council first, for a bunting licence. And only the other day the mayor of Wivenhoe, Essex was complaining about his local county council needing reassurance that the weight of his bunting wasn’t going to pull down telegraph poles.
That said, a growing number of councils have decided to cut right through the blue-white-and-red tape this June, particularly when it comes to taking out public liability cover. This despite dire prophecies from people like James Buck, of quote comparison site PublicLiabilityInsurance.org
“The number of things that can go wrong at a street party really is untold,” he warns, mentioning fireworks, sky lanterns and a “claimant-friendly legal environment” just for starters.
Insurance companies generally require organisers of even the smallest street parties to take out 5million worth of cover – enough to pay out for two deaths and a compete re-surfacing of the road: the kind of eventuality which would require the tombola to get really out of hand.
