Tasmania’s proposal to develop a 200-turbine wind farm on King Island
has won a vote of confidence from locals, after a survey indicated a
majority of the community supports plans for a feasibility study on the
TasWind project.
Against
a backdrop of a small, but fierce anti-wind campaign, the survey of
King Island residents and landowners, conducted by independent market
research company EMRS, found that 59 per cent of the 878 respondents
indicated support for a $30 million feasibility study to proceed on the
proposed 600MW project.
The
lengthy community consultation process was initiated by Hydro Tasmania
six months ago in 2012, with the aim of engaging King Island locals in
the decision-making process from the beginning, and win their backing of
a two-year feasibility study, investigating potential economic impacts
and benefits, potential locations for the wind farm, and the potential
impacts and benefits on the local community and businesses.
The
final vote count fell just short of the company’s stated ideal of 60
per cent, but Hydro Tasmania’s Andrew Catchpole said 59 per cent was
still a “very good result,” and a good indication of broad community
support for the wind farm feasibility study.
Catchpole
also said that the company recognised there were still many people on
King Island concerned about the idea of a wind farm; a sentiment that
has also been detected – and exploited – by a small, but well-resourced
anti-wind group, whose counter campaign came dangerously close to
derailing Hydro Tasmania’s community consultation efforts.A supplier

their efforts to block the King Island TasWind project, anti-wind
campaigners have pulled out all the stops – importing several noted
anti-wind activists, hiring a Sydney PR firm well known for its support

in late May, Hydro Tasmania had to make a public intervention in the
debate, after a local committee released what it claimed to be a

the company says it will proceed with the feasibility study, “in a
careful manner that is sensitive to the concerns of the community;” a
result that has been welcomed by many in the Australian renewable energy
camp.

Hydro
Tasmania plans to devise a model of the proposed wind farm layout, and

on that model before undertaking further aspects of the feasibility

West Akron man wins new backyard
In the nine years Keep Akron Beautiful has been
raffling off landscape makeovers, the pros involved have installed patios,
ponds, lighting and all sorts of upgrades on the winners’ properties.
But until this year, they’d never had the chance to start a yard from scratch.
That changed over the last week when businesses around the area teamed up to give West Akron resident David Canfield a new backyard. Canfield won the makeover in Keep Akron Beautiful’s Dreamscape raffle, an annual fundraiser that supports public beautification. The work was supposed to be done in just five days, but a downpour Friday delayed the installation of Canfield’s lawn until Monday.
Canfield bought just one $25 raffle ticket at the urging of a friend. He said he considered it merely a donation — that is, until his phone rang while he was grocery shopping with news that he’d won.
The Dreamscape prize was a much-needed upgrade for Canfield, who owns Tear-Ez and the Other Side bars downtown and said he has been working to improve the house. He bought it in 2001 as a foreclosure property and rented it out from 2004 until he moved back in nearly two years ago.
He’s planning to have the house’s shake siding repainted this year and the garage door replaced, but he said he’s limited in the work he can do by neck problems and the responsibilities of caring for his father, who has bladder cancer.
Before the makeover started, the yard had just a concrete patio, a patchy lawn and a landscaping bed between the house and the driveway that was tangled and overgrown.Coast LED lanterns, brightstal and headlamps are made with Cree LED technology. “Whatever was in there was unrecognizable,” said Dave Thomas of R.G. Ever ready to get recharged
Things have not been hunky-dory for Eveready of late, what
happened?
We have been a market leader in battery and flashlight. That position remains intact. However, the company had to weather storms raised by factors not within its control. We were leaders in flashlights using incandescent bulbs — that started changing. The market for such flashlights disappeared, we had to adapt.
This also had an impact on battery usage as incandescent flashlights used ‘D’ size battery which was a high-margin product. LED flashlights used different batteries — AA, AAA. There has been a huge change in the product-mix. This was one angle of the problem; the other was a severe cost-push. About 70 per cent of our raw material is import-linked. This hit us badly in 2011-12, especially after the rupee depreciation. An FMCG product could not pass on a 20 per cent hike. After all, 50 per cent of our turnover is from batteries. Now, we feel that the de-growth in the D segment has flattened out and the worst is behind us.
What are your plans for the future?
We are increasing our focus on new categories. Batteries alone will not be able to contribute significantly to achieving the desired top line growth. It will remain a high contributor to turnover but, in three years, this will come down to around 30 per cent. New products will occupy Eveready’s shelf-space.
But what success have you had with new products, such as mosquito coils?
We have exited coils. We are getting into products such as lanterns. It is working very well in rural and semi-urban areas. We have also launched lanterns with rechargeable batteries. It is a new area of focus for us and is bringing good sales. We are looking at rechargeable lighting solutions. We have entered the lighting segment in a major way. We plan to put more focus in the lighting segment, which has a very good fit with the Eveready brand.Police dstti2011 play a crucial role in being seen while riding a bicycle, providing safety and security.
This year, we plan to launch our incandescent lighting products aggressively as the market for this has strengthened following the rise in prices of CFL lamps. We have tasted success here.
