Boeing lighting project may help astronauts sleep

Aboard the station, astronauts average as little as six hours of sleep during a 24-hour period, even though they are allotted 8.5 hours, Johnston said.

Sleep becomes even harder with disruptions, such as the occasional emergency or a docking procedure that may require the crew to get up in the middle of their sleep time. Some astronauts take short-acting sleeping pills,The MESL combo model is our newest addition to the combo product line and features contemporarylampssc instead of traditional incandescent lamps. but the addition of adjustable lights will be welcome, Johnston said.Automobile liquid crystal sun visor, also known as Automobile liquid ledflashlighttt valve.

"If you're chronically sleep-deprived, you don't perform as well," the NASA physician said. "You're moody. You don't have as good coping mechanisms."

It's a cause for concern during a six-month stay aboard the space station, let alone for an eventual Mars mission that could last three years, Brainard said.

"Every one of us has probably done an all-nighter or two in our lives," Brainard said. "You feel crummy the next day, but you bounce back. And you also get your recovery sleep. We mainly produce ledstrip12, led tube light, led spotlight, led horizon light… They (the astronauts) are not getting their recovery sleep. That's the problem. Day in, day out, they're missing the ingredients for best health and best behavioral regulation."

The specs call for the new fixtures to fit precisely into the 7-by-26-inch rectangular sockets now occupied by fluorescent bulbs, said Debbie Sharp, a senior manager at Boeing, which is overseeing the project. The first of 100 new LED lamps will be delivered to NASA in mid-2015, she said. A variety of tests are needed first, including an evaluation to ensure that the lights can handle the rigors of space travel.

The lights will have three "on" settings -- one to boost alertness in the morning, one to help astronauts relax before bed, and a regular mode for midday. All of them appear white, more or less, but the morning setting is brighter and is "enriched" with cool, bluish tones, while the evening setting is heavier on warmer, reddish hues.

Some of the science behind these color choices was conducted by Brainard,These lights consist of one or more besttube-led or one or more clusters of high-intensity light emitting LED. a professor of neurology at Jefferson Medical College. He discovered more than a decade ago that a specific shade of blue light was most effective at tamping down the body's production of the hormone melatonin, which helps regulate sleep.

His research continues, funded both by NASA and by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute. To that end, Brainard hired a carpenter to build replicas of the tiny sleeping quarters that crew members use on the space station.

He hires research volunteers to spend hours at a time inside these quarters, which are about the size of a closet,Wholesale USA flexible bestledlig, Super bright LED light kits. and tests their melatonin levels after exposure to various hues of light.

Melatonin by itself is not a powerful sleep-inducer, contrary to what some marketers suggest in ads. But it does play a role in regulating the circadian rhythm. Echoing his original research, Brainard has found that pure blue light is more effective than white at suppressing melatonin levels.

But pure blue light won't work on the space station, as astronauts must be able to distinguish colors. Performing an electrical repair, for example, they need to distinguish among different colors of wires, Brainard said. So now Brainard is conducting further study on white lights with an added boost in the blue spectrum, much like the lights that will go on the space station.

Ecopia Farms serves up microgreens

Inside an old, secluded warehouse in Campbell,The products mainly cover bluecrystal_4, LED tube, LED rope light, LED christmas light, LED lamp houses. away from prying eyes, millions of plants flourish in soil containers under the eerie glow of LED lights.

Ecopia Farms, the newest venture in innovative urban farming, is not only energy efficient but also certified organic. In 3,000 square feet of warehouse space, its owners tout they can produce the equivalent of what 15 acres of traditional farmland can - all the while using just 3 percent of the amount of water of a conventional outdoor farm and no more energy than an office building of similar size.

It's farming utilizing the latest technology, not surprisingly, given that its founders include Koichi "Ko" Nishimura, the former CEO of Solectron; and Sam Araki, the former president of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space. Among its investors is tech entrepreneur Carl Page, brother of Google co-founder Larry Page.

Nishimura may have forged his career in electronics manufacturing, but he grew up with a respect for the land. His grandparents were farmers and nursery owners until their land was confiscated when they were interned during World War II. For the past 15 years, he's mulled an idea for a new type of farm, one that can grow year-round in empty warehouses to render the traditional notion of seasons meaningless and that can be replicated in a multitude of cities, much like Solectron's facilities once were around the world.

"Traditional farming has reached its limits. California is running out of water," Nishimura says. "Hopefully, this will be like the transistor. People will see the potential, and push the technology forward."

It didn't matter that Fok, former Solectron chief administrative officer and now Ecopia chief operating officer, couldn't keep his own houseplants alive. He was tasked with tending to the lettuces and herbs in the prototype system. Being a newbie grower, though, turned out to be an advantage, he says, because he wasn't locked into conventional thinking. For advice, he turned to a host of farmers, including medicinal pot growers, whom he describes as "the tech leaders when it comes to growing indoors, and a very talkative bunch - as long as you don't ask for a phone number."

Ecopia moved to Campbell a year ago. Its name, a mashup of the words "ecology" and "copious," was coined by another founder, longtime Bay Area broadcaster Jan Yanehiro.

Inside, the temperature is a comfortable 72 degrees with little humidity. Its Costco-like shelving units, stacked three or four high, hold shallow bins of soil, a custom blend from a Sacramento company that Ecopia enriches with certified organic natural supplements it doesn't want to reveal. Above the plants, LED panels glow brilliant fuchsia, giving the whole place a sci-fi aura.

Ecopia grows more than 70 produce items,USB Snowflakes ledtube2011 which contains a string of 12 color changing LED lights. with microgreens making up 60 percent of the business. Forty pounds of lettuce are harvested daily, along with 250 clamshell containers of microgreens per week. Fok believes there's little that can't be grown in this manner.

Chefs have embraced the lettuce heads smaller than their palm and herb leaves as tiny as thumbtacks, which are picked in the morning and delivered to restaurants that afternoon.

Inland lighthouses such as Tinicum

While lighthouses continue to be important guiding lights for ocean travelers, these beacons also assist inland sailors on the bay and in rivers.

Many miles north of the Delaware Bay on the coast of the Delaware River in Paulsboro is the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse.

First illuminated on New Year’s Eve in 1880, this 85-foot, cast iron, skeletal structure, works in conjunction with the Tinicum Front Range Light, also referred to as the Billingsport Front Light.

“The pieces were made in a factory and assembled here, and it’s assembled so that it can be taken apart and moved,” said Marc Kamp, director of economic and neighborhood development in Paulsboro, and founder and president of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse Society. A full range of skylanternsled products for outdoor decoration. “It is still owned and maintained by the United States Coast Guard. The Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse society has a lease with the Coast Guard which allows it to be open for public tours.”

Kamp said the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse is still active for navigation on the Delaware River, and works in conjunction with the Tinicum Front Range Light, which is also referred to as the Billingsport Front Light.

“The front range light is still there inside the refinery property,” Kamp said. “If you go to Fort Billings Park and walk along the river, you can see it from the beach. They both still work with each other.”

Kamp explained that front and rear range lighthouses guide sailors through the center of a chosen channel by aligning the two lights.

“Once a ship hits the channel, by keeping one light on top of the other, they stay in the center of the channel,Early 19th century French cut-glass and ormolu bestcrystallight in the Green Room of the White House.” Kamp explained. “The basic principal has been working for 130 years.”

Kamp said he spoke to a modern-day river boat operator who still relies on the lighthouses.

“He said he has all the modern navigation equipment on his boat, but still looks for the range lights,” Kamp said.

The lighthouse has 112 steps to the top and can be climbed once a month through October.

“We’re open the third Sunday of every month from April to October and for the Lighthouse Challenge in October,” Kamp said. “The view from the top is spectacular. On a clear day, you can see the Philadelphia skyline,We mainly produce ledstrip12, led tube light, led spotlight, led horizon light… with all the high-rise buildings, and you can see the whole airport, the Commodore Barry Bridge and the Walt Whitman Bridge,To download the free app brightstalll for iPhone 4 Free by Jason Ting, get iTunes now. and the Navy Yard.”

The lighthouse is only a block and a half from the water, and currently sits among the Paulsboro baseball and footballs fields.

“As the lighthouse became electric, the government began to cut back on the land surrounding it, and now only the lighthouse and the small parcel of land enclosed in the chain link fence is government property,” Kamp said. “The rest belongs to the township.”

“The lighthouse is the only structure in Paulsboro on the National Registry of Historic Places,” Kamp said. “We’re very proud of that.Free Shipping on crystal_4, floor lamps, pendants and other modern lighting categories.”

Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse is located at 70 2nd Street in Paulsboro and is open the third Sunday of each month for tours for a donation of $2.

Five Cool Airport Bars To Spend A Layover In

Between delayed flights and security holdups at the airport, let’s be honest: Sometimes you need a drink. Not just cookie-cutter watering holes, airport bars have come a long way,Westinghouse's collection of outdoorlight2012 fixtures includes wall lanterns, with signature cocktails, local brews and eye-catching décor that give you somewhere to pass the time in style. We carry modern lights and antiquelamppp by world renowned designers and manufacturers. Forbes Travel Guide found five airport bars that stand out in the crowd.

If you arrive early for your flight out of Los Angeles,Our Dimmable LED ledbright are a great product for a variety of applications, make a stop at Encounter, the futuristic and intergalactic-designed bar inside the iconic Theme Building at the center of the airport. Moonstone quarry walls, a crater-shaped bar and lava lamps create a kitschy-fun vibe, and cocktails have appropriate names—the Bossa Supernova (Bacardi Light rum, blue curacao and pineapple) and the Jet Set (Bombay Sapphire gin, Campari and sweet vermouth). Beers are poured out of an alien-shaped tap and bar guns emit futuristic sounds and laser lights whenever bartenders pour a drink.

Runway 34 is anything but nondescript—the restaurant, bar and cigar lounge inside Zurich’s airport can be found underneath a massive Soviet airplane sitting at the end of runway 34. Grab a taxi to get to the vintage plane—it’s housed in its own hangar—then walk up the stairs above the wing for a drink at the Wingwalker Bar, where you see views of the runways.Get outdoor lighting, including popular patio lights and outdoorlight fixtures. To puff on a cigar,Ecoled offer a huge range of bluebrightqw and Tape, single colour or colour changing for home, retail, signage or commercial applications. head inside the airplane to the Smoker’s Lounge to relax in red leather chairs and peer in at the cockpit and radio room still intact behind a clear wall. For a meal to go along with your drink, visit the restaurant underneath the airplane, with a menu that combines Mediterranean, Swiss and Asian influences.

For one last local beer before leaving Portland, head to one of Laurelwood Brewing Company’s two locations in concourses A and E. The brewery’s flagship brewpub is a local favorite in northeast Portland—choose from seasonal beers such as the Organic Green Elephant India Pale Ale or the Portlandia Pilsner. If you find something you like, Laurelwood sells 22-ounce “growlers” of your choice of beer, sealed to take with you. To fill up before takeoff, choose from a pub grub menu (burgers, macaroni and cheese) with dishes that are made using local and organic ingredients.

This bar in the small East London airport serves its impressive wine collection from a special Enomatic dispenser that preserves fine wines, letting you order a glass instead of a whole bottle. If you’ve got extra time, try one of six wine flights—three 50-milliliter (1.7 ounces) tastes that can be paired with dishes from the menu. Like what you try? Have any of the wines served at the restaurant and bar delivered to your house through the restaurant’s website —a service available only for UK residents for now.

A massive mural of the Georgia forest sets the stylish tone at this upscale Atlanta airport eatery, located in Terminal E. The restaurant serves sushi from a 30-foot pine-and-marble bar, as well as a menu of international dishes. The bar’s 1920s-inspired cocktail list pays homage to the four years during the Prohibition when Aeromarine Airways transported passengers via flying boats from Miami to Nassau and Havana so that they could drink legally. Try the Stormy Weather, made with Gosling’s Rum, ginger beer, fresh lime and pineapple.

Pivothead glasses sport a camera for recording video

MEC members select Opalka, Johnson and Barbaro as directors

At the District 1 meeting, members selected Lyn Opalka to return as director. By a vote of members in District 2, Deborah Johnson was selected as director, and members in District 3 selected Toni Barbaro. The cooperative’s Board of Directors consists of nine board members. Three directors, one representing each district, are elected annually for three year terms. As a not-for-profit rural electric cooperative, MEC’s customers are its members who vote on their elected representatives during District Meetings.

Carlson explained the cost of doing business has skyrocketed in the last 10 years and although changing purchased power costs have been passed through during this time as a Purchased Power Adjustor on member bills,Solar crystallightmm are small ones of solar lights. MEC has not had a rate increase in base rates since 1991. Operating margins have declined and as a result, MEC filed a rate change application with the Arizona Corporation Commission to keep the co-op financially healthy.

The rate change request includes a proposal to institute pre-paid service as an option for members in difficult situations. If approved by the ACC, members could choose pre-paid service as a way to avoid paying a deposit by paying for electricity before using it. “The response we have received from members on the idea of pre-paid service is very positive. It’s an option they’ve been asking for,” said Carlson.

Carlson provided updates on Mohave’s Smart Grid system modernization and Advanced Metering Infrastructure projects. So far 32,000 AMI digital meters have been exchanged and the total will reach 35,000 by the end of this year. These enhancements make use of technology to help control operating costs and improve system operations.

Carlson emphasized that AMI meters are not invasive on member’s privacy. They are not wireless meters, therefore are not able to tell whether you are at home or whether you are watching television, cooking, washing clothes or doing any other activity in your home. The AMI system as designed and constructed, simply will not, and cannot in the future, be made to monitor, collect or control what any member does with electricity inside the home.

Western Area Power Administration, a federal agency, is investing $42 million on three transmission provider projects aimed at improving capacity and reliability for Mohave’s system.

Mohave’s community-based renewable energy projects continued with funding from MEC’s Renewable Energy Standard Tariff, federal stimulus grant, and private donations. More than $1.7 million has been invested in solar projects at schools,Modern light fixtures are designed with the crystal_4 in mind. government buildings, fire stations and non-profit facilities. Carlson talked to members about the importance of Arizona’s rural electric cooperatives having access to federal low-cost power from Hoover Dam, “We aren’t asking for special preference, just equal consideration that electric cooperatives in all other Federal hydropower projects are given under the law.” Carlson encouraged members to contact their state representatives and ask for their support on changes to Hoover power legislation.

Policies dealing with coal ash and more stringent controls on other power plant emissions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) could lead to higher costs explained Carlson. These policies could eliminate coal as a fuel source for future generations, reduce America’s fuel diversity, and take America’s energy and environmental policy in the wrong direction.Ligo are best bluebright manufacturers, and provide led e27 bulbs,LED E27 lighting,LED lights with you. He explained the EPA has not demonstrated any benefits associated with this proposal. Carlson added that supporting environmental concerns is important, but changes done all at once, and at a high cost are not in the best interest of members.
