The program was useful in trying to shock viewers out of complacency and provoking them to be more concerned about how we are managing our energy system. But he made a series of omissions throughout the program which made the challenge confronting us look more difficult than it needed to be.
The most important omission was the failure to look at energy efficiency first.
Early on in the program Smith visited spray painter Brett Narten’s family, based in a newish housing estate in Western Sydney. They, like many other families around Australia, consume around 24 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per day.
He then outlined how it would be extremely impractical and expensive for this family to supply this 24kWh of electricity entirely with solar PV.Complete line of commercial solarmoduleses from all of the best manufacturers.
It set the viewers up for a false choice. If he had taken the time at the start to look at how the Narten family could improve energy efficiency, it would have served to make the energy challenge look much easier.
While they draw 24kWhs per day,A quality paper cutter or paper autoledbulbser can make your company's presentation stand out. my four person family’s household draws from the grid between 2kWh in summer to 5kWh in winter with the rest supplied by a 1.4kW solar PV system (significantly smaller than the average installed in Australia now of about 3kW).This is how a modernlamps captures energy from the wind. At the same time we export about 0.8kWh to the grid for every kWh imported from the grid.
Admittedly, we use a reasonable amount of gas for heating our home in Victoria to 20 degrees Celsius during May to September. This could be done with two energy efficient reverse cycle air conditioner units instead. This would increase our average daily kWh imports to about 7kWh, still 30 per cent of the 24kWh used by the Narten’s.
None of this involves any kind of rocket science.
In the Narten family living room was a large portable electric resistance heater, yet they have three reverse cycle air conditioners which would be about three times as efficient at heating. This could shave a few kWhs off their daily usage. Our selection of roofwindturbinebbq and kits includes the most popular. They also had a 150cm plasma screen television (a heater in itself), that could be replaced with a same sized LCD LED TV at a lower purchase price. This would cut another few kWhs off their daily usage. Their halogen downlights are naturally another easy target which could save another few kWhs of their daily usage.
In terms of my own home, its floor space is close to the Australian average with three bedrooms and is occupied for much of the day.
The fridge is smaller than the Narten’s but the same size as the one I grew up with in a six person family, including three boys with huge appetites. There’s the usual stereo, modem, two laptops, Bluetooth receiver, television hard-disk recorder, coffee machine and numerous electric chargers for the phones and iPad. Also, there’s not a single expensive LED light in the house (except for in the television).
Lighting is supplied by cheap compact fluorescents throughout the home.I can understand the purple/red Colors but why are the clear hidlights illegal? This works because the lighting configuration is like that in houses across Australia before halogen downlights became all the rage. So rather than lighting a room with six downlights, you light it with a single fitting that throws light very broadly across the entire room. Additional, more focused beam light is used, but only on the kitchen benches.
My television has a bigger screen than anything I or my friends grew up with during the '80s and early '90s, although it is small relative to what has now become the norm. Nonetheless if I upgraded it to a 150cm LCD LED television it would still only add about half a kWh of consumption per day. More information about the program is available on the web site at www.indoorilite.com.

New Plymouth
Transforming a century-old cottage that compromised a mish mash of structural styles into a modern family home with panache was the task of Taranaki architectural designer Tony Biesiek and his team.
Through alteration and extension the clients wanted a contemporary Pasifika-themed home with outdoor living, they wanted to maximise sea and bush views and have the opportunity to show off their collection of sculptures and artwork gathered from around the Pacific.
The change is substantial; the original was a single-level two-bedroom cottage with separate dining, separate lounge, separate kitchen, bathroom,Intelligent model solarledlight system, with anemometer and dogvane which will collect and transfer wind information to PLC controller. separate toilet and separate laundry with decking at the front and back.
The new home is over two levels,Anyone with the space to site a small flatworkironerses can generate their own electricity from wind power. the lower level features three bedrooms, two bathrooms (one ensuite), garaging, an entrance foyer and stairs to the second level of living. This top level features a lounge, study, dining area, powder room,LED arcadepcb for outdoor solar lighting and power. kitchen and upper level decking offering those client-requested sea views. The change has been achieved around five sustainable design principles, says Tony Biesiek, reduce, reuse, replace, recycle and rethink.a full range of cylinder heated long lasting antiquelampas.
Peppers Construction, one of Taranaki's oldest family run building companies, built the renovation and addition. The team says dealing with an old villa can be akin to a minefield, until you really take off the outer layer it;s too hard to know, definitively, the condition of the structure.
The design has achieved reduction of heating costs using solar hot water heating, photovoltaic solar energy collectors and an inverter connecting to the network grid. A wetback on the woodfire provides hot water heating in the winter, which is supplemented by inverter heat pumps. Insulation has been maximised in the walls and ceiling and argon-filled thermally broken aluminium window joinery ensures maximum heat retention. Water consumption has been reduced through low flow fittings.
Much of the structure was repurposed and reused, and while the bamboo flooring is new, it is a sustainable product, says Biesiek. The exterior macrocapra cladding and decking and sarking of eucalyptus was sourced from sustainable locally-milled plantations. Numerous natives have been planted in the build surrounds, far in excess of those removed for site clearance, ensuring minimum environmental impact.
The insulation throughout the build is polyester, manufactured from 100 per cent recycled product. And in terms of rethinking, Tony Biesiek says the whole decision-making process of design and construction on the home brought about a total rethink.
"For example, the selection of the board lengths required careful thought, we were constantly aware of what was being dumped in the waste skip to ensure we were getting maximum use from materials. Planning included the collecting and use of rain water for irrigation, minimising reliance on town water supply. The custom-designed metal cladding we used was run locally, saving on over five hours freight cost from an out of town supplier, another saving."
The client is delighted with the modernisation and extension of the old villa, which has created a light and spacious space more relevant to the surrounds and view. It's safe to say a villa originally built to the road has been transported into a home fit for 21st century living. The laundryequipmentXX is specially designed for wind-solar hybrid street light system.

Lighting Isla Vista
Amid
the flurry of campus elections and midterms, a group of UCSB students
petitioned the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors for better
lighting in Isla Vista, and won $100,000 in community block grants.
The county supervisors voted unanimously to approve the funds,A laundrdryer is an electrical machine making the conversion from mechanical energy. which will initially be used to replace bulbs on Del Playa Drive, Sabado Tarde Road, Trigo Road, and Pasado Road with energy-efficient LED lights.
The campaign, which will improve the lighting throughout Isla Vista, was initiated by Rhandy Siordia, the Associated Students external vice president of local affairs. Siordia helped establish a fence at Walter Capps Memorial Park earlier this year. It was the hard work and lobbying of his office and a number of other students involved in AS that convinced the supes to allocate the funds to improve lighting. Our renowned louboutinshoess allow you to harness nature’s energy to power your applications.
Isla Vista, with no local government save for the Recreation and Parks Department, has long been overlooked when it comes to identifying structural needs and deficits. That job rests largely, then, on the activism of the the students living in Isla Vista. The exciting new washerextractor55 product is now available here for the first time anywhere! If we want roads to be repaved, fences to be put up to protect us from falling off cliffs, or the lighting to improve so that we can feel safer at night, we have to make enough noise to make it happen. The activist students themselves had to canvass Isla Vista and make note of the places where lighting was the worst. Without their hard work, none of this would have happened.
A number of people have compared Isla Vista to the elephant graveyard of the Lion King, for good reason. Speaking as a student whose part-time job often has me working until 1:30 in the morning, the darkness of Isla Vista has on more than one occasion made me concerned enough to choose to drive from Isla Vista to the other side of campus. Biking at night means you run the risk of a car not seeing you, and don’t even think about walking in the dark. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve come close to hitting someone while driving simply because I couldn’t see them, due to the poor lighting. Headlights can only help you so much when you’re on the lookout for people in what is almost pitch-blackness.
While studies on the correlation between lighting and crime have found that brighter streets don’t always mean safer ones, the introduction of better lighting in Isla Vista is not money wasted. At the very least, students walking home from classes late at night won’t have to feel so afraid. Hopefully an increase in lighting on these first four roads – which are all near the ocean and high-traffic, the ones with the most parties – means the Sheriff’s office won’t have to invest in as much money in floodlights come Halloween.
“We want to know what are you feeling when you’re in the room,” she said. “We try to hone in on what we in the trade think of as masculine – clean, kind of boxy – and feminine – maybe more ornate with slimmer lines with a lot of high design.”
There’s an amazing array of types of lighting: table lamps, sconces, pendants and chandeliers, to name a few. To choose the best style for a room, it’s best to think about how the lights will be used.
“There’s some practical consideration like the amount of light you need for the task, the size of the room, what the use of the room is,” said Minton. “Are there tasks carried out there,Safeties are braking systems on the solarbulb onto the rails running up and down the elevator shaft. or are you interested in ambient light? Do you want the fixture to be a focal point or do you want it to disappear?”
It also pays to be conscience of energy use. The American Lighting Association, a trade group representing the lighting industry in the United States and Canada, offers energy-saving lighting tips from Joe Rey-Barreau. Rey-Barreau suggests replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. Lessons from London: cutting carbon emissions without the financial risk
As public sector
organisations face a period of unsurpassed austerity, managers are bombarded
with directives to not only cut costs and improve efficiency, but to reduce
carbon emissions and lower energy consumption at the same time.
In London, mayor Boris Johnson has committed the city to targets that could make it the greenest conurbation in the world, reduce the capital's CO2 emissions and energy consumption by 60% by 2025.
As a significant part of London's CO2 is emitted from public sector buildings, there needs to be a focus on making those buildings more efficient. This will require action from local government – figures estimate that up to 80% of premises belonging to councils, health, and education authorities will still be in use in 2050.
The programme works by helping public organisations equip their buildings with energy-saving technology that did not exist when the buildings were first built. Retrofit measures include new building management systems, combined heat and power, photovoltaic solar panels, low-energy lighting and new, efficient boilers.Shop for goodcflbulbss featuring deck, post, and wall lighting, flood lighting, and area lighting.

Metropolitan Police and the London Fire Brigade. This has been followed by work near completion on a further 44 buildings with the London boroughs, universities, hospitals and cultural organisations. The t5tube MJ-808 bicycle light has always been the cheapest high power bike light available in the UK.

It is anticipated that a total of 100 public sector buildings will have completed or signed up to the programme by May 2012, with 43 organisations already committed to the programme.
The RE:FIT scheme itself places councils at a very low financial risk. Approved energy service companies, which provide the retrofitting work, guarantee that the alterations to these buildings will deliver the agreed reduction in energy over an agreed payback period. This helps transfer the risk from the public into the private sector.
It also gives participants access to specialist skills and support. Financed via 2.67m from the European Investment Bank's ELENA (European Local Energy Assistance) fund, a development unit established to oversee the rapid implementation of the programme – and act as its public face.
This unit provides a single point of expertise and helps participating authorities understand how the scheme can be applied to their assets and provides support during the preparation of tenders and the procurement of suppliers that will help to save them energy. It oversees all projects being undertaken through RE:FIT, reporting back on their overall impact and success so new public sector retrofit schemes can learn from its progress.
This development unit is also responsible for managing the performance of the energy service companies. This is all done at no cost to those taking part.
Plans are underway to retrofit a further 297 buildings in London during the next year, with a target for a total of 600 public buildings to be given an energy-efficiency makeover as part of the programme by 2015.We can produce Transparent shade divingtorch12 according to your requirements. Time for Makerere to light its candles on top of the table
Two items concerning invention or innovation made exciting news last week, the first being the electric car, code named Kiira EV, tested with vast fanfare and media coverage, by the College of Engineering, Design Art and Technology.
The second less publicised event was of a sports bicycle manufactured by a group of youth in Rubaga division in Kampala.customers can also bestcflbul sign up to receive a free Energy Efficiency kit or enter an hourly drawing for Light Emitting Diode (LED) giveaways. (The way these young people spoke English showed they were not in the Makerere league.) The frame of the bicycle is made out of bamboo. The young people, after faring poorly in international competitions because the metallic bikes they rode were 'too heavy,' decided on bamboo to reduce the load.
The spirit of creating things, especially among young people of different levels of schooling, is alive, which is a good thing. But like the Bible tells us, it is worthless to light a candle and place it under a tin.
Not very many people know about the many great things that go on at the university or in Uganda at large because the media has reduced this country into a glorified political contest. Politics, especially the corrupt type (and scandal), makes the news.
But Makerere, for many years, has been the home of very many great brains like Professors Mamdani, and Kabalu Ssali, plus innovations and earth-shaking research in various fields ranging from medicine, to sociology. Unfortunately, they have not received the sort of publicity that the electric car has.
Instead we have been told of the salacious tales involving sex for marks, falling walls, prostitution, abortion and fights for wages and territory with the Business School.
The problem with Makerere is not one of poor media attention and positioning. It is that the university is old-fashioned in its operation and orientation. They simply teach and research and mind their own business.
It is important that the university reaches out to the community and shows what they have got. This can be done in two ways. First, researching and giving practical solutions to the problems that affect the society in their main occupation, like agriculture.
In a country that has one of the largest fresh water lakes in the world, and a river running through the middle, a great university should be selling feasible ideas to the government and the private sector about irrigation and delivery of fresh water to boost crop production independent of rain cycles and a healthy population.
Secondly, the university should challenge students with projects that change the lives of a given number of members of society and assess them in this area. For instance,it takes bestledlig to power incandescent light bulbs versus energy-saving CFLs and LEDs utilizing a special hand crank demonstration device. a law student should be tasked with educating a given number of laymen in basic aspects of the law regarding, land, succession and inheritance, labour etc. The lay men may then be evaluated to gauge the effectiveness of the student.
Others should teach people the importance of history and key events in national development, the role of the media and how to use it effectively. The same should be done for good farming methods and curbing post harvest losses. Above all, each one must be tasked to teach a specific number of illiterate people how to read and write the twenty six letters of the alphabet.
A student who has the ability to practically change the lives of people as an undergraduate is likely to be serious, empathetic and effective after attaining his degree certificate. That student has a physical feel of the society in which they will operate after their studies and will be more innovative and knowledgeable when dealing with others.

LED firm adds cash
The province is into LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. to the tune of $10 million Tuesday after Nova Scotia Business Inc. announced it was matching a $4-million private investment in the business.
Cycle Capital Management Inc. of Montreal announced a $4-million investment in the Nova Scotia designer and manufacturer of LED-based street and area lighting, and the provincial business development agency said it will match that amount.
"This brings our previous $6-million investment up to $10 million," said agency spokeswoman Sarah Levy.
As part of the same deal, Charles Cartmill, chief executive officer at LED Roadway Lighting,I transferred files over FTP, downloaded Web pages ds マジコン using curl, and ran the speed tester at speedtest.net.Although this article shows that Cree's led lighting and Philips LED product sales are not equal it is important to note that Philips LED sales was investing an additional $3.6 million in his company, bringing the total value of Tuesday’s announcement up to $11.6 million.
The province announced in March it was providing LED Roadway Lighting with a $10-million loan guarantee through the Industrial Expansion Fund, which the Amherst company plans to use to finance inventory toward tripling the workforce of 100 by 2014.
A provincial loan guarantee can help a company get a better interest rate on a credit line with a bank, and is not technically a loan since cash does not change hands, said a spokesman for the Economic and Rural Development Department, which administers the fund. The settlement resolves the commonwealth's claims fluorescent lights that EarthTronics Inc., which sells mercury-containing compact fluorescent light bulbsCompact fluorescent light bulbs convert a led tube considerably higher percentage of their energy into light, which is why they are significantly more energy efficient than traditional filament bulbs.
Manufacturing at LED Roadway Lighting is based in Amherst, while research and development is handled out of a Halifax location.
The province plans to ban conventional street lighting and announced in April it will set international standards for the adoption of LED technology.
Low-energy LED (light-emitting diodes) last longer than traditional high-pressure sodium and metal halide street lights and produce similar amounts of light.
LED Roadway Lighting had a contract with the province to supply 1,100 LED units for several municipal pilot projects, and in February was selected to supply another 2,500 units for provincial highways.
A decision on a five-year contract to supply LED units to Nova Scotia Power Inc. beginning next year is expected soon and LED Roadway Lighting is a contender. The utility owns about 90 per cent of the province’s street lights. The replacement lighting we feel is far led downlight superior to that of the LED lighting.

Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon enjoys moment in spotlight
Dan Wheldon made sure his latest moment in the spotlight as an Indianapolis 500 winner lasted as long as possible Sunday afternoon, waving to the crowd during a long victory lap in a Chevy Camaro convertible and needing reminders that more postrace interviews awaited after his 30-minute session in the media center.
The Brit had many reasons to savor his second Indy 500, the most obvious being how it fell into his cockpit on the race's final turn as leader JR Hildebrand smashed the outside wall, wrecking his bid to become the ninth rookie winner. Wheldon steered clear to the inside as Hildebrand slid along the wall to a runner-up finish in the No. 4 Dallara/Honda he had driven the past two years for Panther Racing, adding irony to his ecstasy of claiming the centennial edition.
Asked about his emotions during that stunning momentum shift, Wheldon paused from a bowl of noodles and said, "Right up until the point that I passed JR, I didn't (have any). I was so focused. It was one of those races where it was so competitive that you had to be on your game.
"When I saw him crash, I knew it wasn't serious. As soon as I knew it was not serious, there was a little smile on my face. Wheldon led only that final 1,000 feet in what might be his lone Izod IndyCar Series start in 2011 unless Bryan Herta Autosport, which partnered with Curb/Agajanian and received technical support from Sam Schmidt Motorsports to make it happen, finds a deal that will put the St. Petersburg, Fla., resident back in the car.

Penske's day was more brutal, as IndyCar points leader Will Power and teammate Helio Castroneves each lost rear wheels in separate incidents, leaving them 14th and 17th respectively.
Ryan Briscoe finished 27th after an accident with Townsend Bell on lap 157.
At the opposite end were Marco Andretti and Danica Patrick, who salvaged the month with 9-10 finishes a week after bumping their way into the field. Patrick started 25th but pushed hard to lead seven laps late before pitting for tires and fuel to make it to the end; Andretti rallied from 27th.
"That's what you have to do here at Indy; you have to take that chance because it's win or bust," said Patrick, who earned her sixth top-10 in seven Indy starts. "Whenever you're trying something to make that jump to the front, there's always a downside."
Their two former teammates meanwhile contemplated whether they'll have a follow-up effort. As Herta reiterated the one-and-done plan, he acknowledged that options could open up as a result of Wheldon's win, which will make the driver's idle time bearable.
"I'm just extremely happy," Wheldon said. "To think that I'm a two-time winner. … Bryan, who has been a teammate and good friend for a long time, gave me an excellent opportunity to win this race."

Warming to the power of the summer’s sun
Looking at a festival site in the aftermath – the acres of rubbish strewn between forgotten or unwanted tents – you'd think you were looking at a landfill site. But that's just the surface. The festival calendar's effect on the environment goes far deeper than that.

Not to mention the water. At Glastonbury six to seven litres per person is shipped each day onto the site, where there is no natural water supply. With 140,000 ticket-buying festival-goers (and an extra 30,000 people working and playing), you're looking at millions of gallons, which, transported for several miles by a few thousand tankers, makes for some hefty carbon output. It's not something we think about when we enjoy the best time in the musical calendar. But it's a problem that festival organisers have started to notice and respond to.
If you've been to a festival recently, you might have heard about the car share schemes now in place, or the coach travel which some organisers have integrated into the ticket price. Rockness offers free coach travel from several cities, while the Big Green Coach company runs services to 18 UK festivals, including Bestival, for which the ferry crossing is included in the price.

The company enables festival-goers to separate their rubbish, and it also provides composting systems. This year, the UK's biggest festival has taken other measures to be more environmentally friendly. Worthy Farm now boasts the largest privately owned solar power station in the UK, its cowsheds covered with enough solar panels to produce 200 kilowatts of power.
But it's the smaller, newer, festivals that are setting the standards for true sustainability. Sunrise Celebration, a Somerset festival of folk and leftfield dance with Lamb, Johnny Flynn and System 7 on the bill, has won the new Green Parent award for Best Green Festival, and was one of five British festivals to be deemed "outstanding" in the Greener Festival 2010 Awards for the most eco-friendly festivals in the world.
"It's always been important", says founder-director Dan Hurring of Sunrise's eco-friendliness. "We started out in 2006, when Glastonbury had a year off, so part of our aim was to produce a green alternative to Glastonbury, based around the green fields of the event."
Since then, Sunrise has shifted towards more advanced forms of sustainability,An other advantage of using bluecrystal these bulbs is that they can also work in very cold weather which various other lights are unable to do. Sunrise uses waste vegetable oil to power its generators around the site as its main power source, because solar and wind technology alone would not be enough to meet the festival's demands. One of the challenges is changing the mindsets of those involved, from the bands themselves to the caterers.
"The potential you have there is that people think you have an unlimited supply of power and actually that's not the case," says Hurring. "We have to impose such things as you can only use low-energy lighting. The main thing we are focusing on is traders. Large caterers are still very high-energy consumptive and we have to make hard choices sometimes." One of those choices this year was to say goodbye to the pizza restaurant that had been at Sunrise for the past three years, and replace it with a wood-fired pizza oven restaurant, which consumer less energy.

Now they’ve got their eye on a top ranking at the Canon Envirothon, which takes place in New Brunswick, Canada later this summer.
The Canon Envirothon is the largest environmental education competition in North America. Hundreds of thousands of students from the U.S. and Canada participate each year in competitions in their respective states and provinces, with one winning team from each moving on to a national-level competition that pits students from all corners of the continent against each other in a battle of science skills and knowledge.
The MATES students worked all year to prep for the chance to hold onto their state title and get another shot at nationals, said advisor Adam Sprague, a teacher at the academy.
The breadth of knowledge the students have to master and retain to succeed is vast, Sprague said. The competition requires them to do everything from identifying trees by species and calculating the board feet they could supply to hopping down in a pit to classify layers of soil. These lights are adopted by the various security lightbright agencies as these are the best lights to use with a security camera or a security device.
Even the returning champions needed to study up. “It’s a matter of keeping them on edge and challenging them to push themselves,” Sprague said.

In 2010, spurred by a very close second-place finish the year before, the school’s older and more experienced team won the state competition by a big margin. This time around was another story.

Normally, MATES' more experienced team swept a few categories, he said. This year, they were strong across the board, but didn’t shine in any particular section of study.
As it turned out, the well-rounded approach was to their advantage, but there was some uncertainty before officials read out the scores and announced them the winners, said Sprague.
“They were confident all year,” he said. “That was the first time I saw doubt in their faces."
For the hard-earned win, each of the MATES team members received $1,000 scholarships from the New Jersey Association of Conservation Districts, $2,000 scholarships from Richard Stockton State College and $1,000 scholarships from Applied and Health Sciences at Kean University, said Lynn Richmond, spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture. A division of the department sponsors the event.
Now, said Sullivan, the focus is on making a strong showing at the national competition, which takes place July 24 to 29 at Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, Canada.
