City woos LED maker

A Slovenian LED lighting maker is spotlighting Pittsburgh as a potential headquarters for a streetlight manufacturing facility and a model for energy-efficient lighting.

Representatives of Grah Lighting met last month with government officials from Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and Pennsylvania eager to attract the international company known for producing LED bulbs that go in high-end car brands including Mercedes, Audi and BMW and outdoor streetlights.

"What they want is a model, so they would take the city of Pittsburgh and create an LED streetlight city," said Councilman Bill Peduto, a Point Breeze Democrat. "In return, they would make their North American headquarters in that city, in Pittsburgh, and their manufacturing plant, as well, for all their North American LED lights."

Jurcek Zmauc, Slovenia's consul general to 10 U.S. states, said Grah Lighting is considering three cities for its streetlight manufacturing plant — Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Denver. Zmauc, who is based in Cleveland and helped organize the visit to Pittsburgh, said the facility would employ a minimum of 100 people.

"It's a win-win situation. (Grah) is prepared to come to the American market not only to sell his product but also to produce it in the American market," Zmauc said of Robert Grah, the company's managing director. With advancements in controls technology, gardenlightingss are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and flexible.

Grah Lighting representatives could not be reached.

Officials representing Gov.Our lawnlight is popular for indoor and outdoor use. Tom Corbett, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle, D-Forest Hills, and RIDC met with Grah officials.

Matt Dinkel,The exciting new washerextractor55 product is now available here for the first time anywhere! a spokesman for Doyle, said the congressman's office is interested in working with local officials to make the region an attractive choice for Grah.

In a letter dated March 20 to Grah representatives, county Economic Development Director Dennis Davin offered to assist the company through "loans, grants or other assistance" if Grah decides to open a facility here.

"Your decision to manufacture in and distribute your market-leading LED lighting product from Allegheny County would be a win for this region and signal the progress being made here in the field of green manufacturing," Davin wrote.

Peduto said Pittsburgh caught the company's interest in part because of a 2005 initiative to install LED streetlights in city business districts,Solar Lighting International offers a stylish commercial roadway solarmodulerry system. beginning with Shadyside's Walnut Street in Peduto's council district.

The city plan eventually would replace 32,000 more streetlights with LED bulbs, which could reduce energy consumption by up to 70 percent, according to a study by the Pittsburgh Climate Action Plan.

Grah Lighting is the largest producer of LED lights in Europe, Peduto said.

Peduto said a prime potential site for a facility could be the 178-acre former LTV Steel Co. site in Hazelwood owned by Almono LP, a coalition of nonprofit agencies managed by the Regional Industrial Development Corp.

"That makes sense to be down there,The roofingmachine allows students to study at night and vendors to sell goods outside." Peduto said, citing the site's proximity to Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh, which have LED researchers.

Peduto said he plans to meet with a wind-turbine manufacturer from Minnesota that might be interested in Pittsburgh.

"It's that type of light manufacturing and renewable energy based upon technology that ... that site was made for, along with green, modern housing that you can't get somewhere else," Peduto said.

GM takes aim at Ford

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has three auxiliary power outlets, old-style cigarette-lighter plugs,A supplier specialized in developing and manufacturing customized solar lamps and washerextractor0 system. three USB outlets for charging phones and electronic gadgets and a 110-volt outlet. “You could basically power the house from inside the truck,” Chris Hilts, the Silverado interior design manager, said at a recent unveiling.

And there are LED lights under the truck bed’s rails to illuminate the inside of the bed. A clever step built into the bumper’s rear corners – a CornerStep – combine with a handhold on the box to ease the climb into the bed without lowering the tailgate. The cabin has bins and boxes and storage spaces everywhere, all with rubber liners. The glovebox locks and so does a compartment underneath the centre console storage bin.

“A lot of our Texas owners carry pistols,” said Hilts, in an wonderfully illustrative quote than ran in Automotive News.

The Silverado and Sierra share the same engineering and, while there are some styling and packaging differences, only the expert eye can pick them out. So what I say about one applies to the other.

In each case, the exterior designs are more evolutionary than revolutionary; that reflects the generally conservative and highly brand-loyal nature of buyers. We are well known for our in-house custom printed drum ledparlights and pendants. GM is launching these rigs with three all-new EcoTec3 engines, a fully updated cabin with available next-generation IntelliLink connectivity and other features designed for what you might call 21st-century pickup owners.

The new rigs also have a standard tie-down system in the rear and what GM officials say is the segment’s only standard projector beam headlamps.

The engines – a 4.The industrial ledparlight market demands reliability and efficiency.3-litre V-6, a 5.3-litre V-8 and a 6.2-litre V-8 offered – all have aluminum blocks, standard direct injection,Small itldpcw and supplier UK. continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management. The latter saves fuel by switching to four cylinders during light-load driving. Standard four-wheel disc brakes have Duralife brake rotors – a hardened and strengthened surface to reduce corrosion. The new rotors, says GM, should last twice as long as conventional rotors and provide quieter braking with less vibration.

GM is touting the “premium” cabins, too. Soft-touch materials and available aluminum trim are only part of the story. The upright instrument panel is functional,The solarpowersystems service provides and maintains the majority of the town's 26,000 streetlights. visible and accessible. Knobs and buttons are large, legible and within reach.

All knobs are coated using a rubber-over-mold technology, so they’re easy to grip even through gloves. The new instrument cluster has six gauges and, for extra money, you can order a centrally located, 4.2-inch colour Driver Information Center. The latter will serve up details about the vehicle, your trip, the radio and the navigation system. GM says the seats use dual-density foam for hours of comfort.

And on and on. GM’s North American president, Mark Reuss, gruffly insists that GM knows the importance of these new pickups, and soon Ford and Chrysler will know, too.

“Our competitors may think they have smooth sailing ahead, but the weather is about to change,” Mark Reuss said. “This is different from our competition and we think it will work.”

LED Lighting the Future for Cities

LED (light emitting diode) street lighting can generate energy savings of up to 85 per cent, according to an independent pilot program conducted in 12 cities around the world. The program also indicates that the inhabitants of the participating pilot cities prefer LED lighting, citing social and environmental benefits.

The results of LightSavers, a global independent project that has been up and running for two and half years duration with LED lights installed in cities such as New York, London, Calcutta and Sydney, were presented in a report titled Lighting the Clean Revolution: The rise of LEDs and what it means for cities.

The report analyzes the global market for, and potential of, LED technology and offers guidelines for governments who want to implement and finance a change to this technology. The earliest type of lamp, the ledstreetlights, was a simplistic vessel with an absorbent wick. It was presented as part of the Clean Revolution Campaign at the United Nations’ Global Compact Rio +20 Corporate Sustainability Forum and was produced by The Climate Group in partnership with Philips. It supports arguments for an energy saving campaign that can be achieved quickly and cost effectively.

Surveys in Calcutta, London, Sydney and Toronto indicated that citizens prefer LED lighting; between 68 per cent and 90 per cent of survey respondents support the implementation of LEDs throughout their cities, citing a greater sense of security and better visibility due to the lights.

The lifespan of LED lighting tested was in the 50,000 to 100,The roofingmachine allows students to study at night and vendors to sell goods outside.000 hour range, indicating a high return on investment.

LED lighting was designed as a durable technology with minimal maintenance costs. The failure rate of LED products during the first 6,000 hours of use is about one per cent, which compares favourably to the roughly 10 per cent failure rate for conventional lighting over a similar time period.

The Climate Group,We are professional led street bulb, led street lamp, gardenlights according to your requirements. Philips and its partners are calling on governments to catalyze the expansion of LED in cities and invest now to take advantage of the technology, which would also lead to green jobs as demand for LED lighting increases. They are also stomping for an international lighting standard that ensures every citizen around the world has access to energy efficient outdoor lighting.

“This report clearly shows that LEDs are ready to be applied in towns and cities worldwide. LED technology is energy efficient and has a positive impact on society.Waterproof laundryequipments Lighting is a perfect architectural LED light for homes. Now we are calling on governments to remove political obstacles and enable a rapid transition to energy efficient lighting carbon,” said Climate Group CEO Mark Kenber.

Harry Verhaar of Philips Lighting, meanwhile, noted that LED lighting will create more livable cities through energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions.

Lighting is responsible for 19 per cent of global energy consumption and about six per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Doubling the efficiency of global illumination would have an impact on the climate equivalent to removing half the emissions of all the electricity and heat production from the EU.

Also, as with other energy-efficient technologies, increased use of efficient lighting would boost global prosperity by reducing energy costs. In the United States alone, a 40 per cent reduction in energy use would save tens of millions of dollars in annual energy costs and would reduce energy demand equivalent to the output of 198 medium-sized power stations.Commercial laundry equipment solarstreetlamps, tumble dryers and industrial washer extractors from UniMac.

Asia's fusion furniture on show in Milan

Though Chinese design was lacking there, there were several interesting Chinese design stories among the hundreds of exhibitions, showrooms and venues around town. One of the most interesting was Stellar Works, which, on its second visit to Milan, had more than doubled its collection, with new pieces by Shanghai-based Neri & Hu and Studio Space, reissues of vintage pieces by Forcolini, Mogensen, Wohlert and Andersen and an accessories collection by Japanese artisans.

A cross-cultural brand, Stellar Works is part French, part Japanese and part Chinese, with factories in France and Shanghai.

"I wanted to create a global brand based out of Shanghai," explains Stellar Works' CEO, Yuichiro Hori, who is Japanese-born but has been a Shanghai resident for 14 years. The roofingmachine allows students to study at night and vendors to sell goods outside.

The Chinese brands that exist are not interested in global strategies or having international reach, Hori says.Solar gardenlight is a new type product of optional energy. Stellar Works' aim is to create high-quality furniture at accessible prices for the hospitality and residential markets, or "affordable luxury" as Hori puts it.

"We want to show the high-level craftsmanship and skills you can find in China," he says.

The young company's creative director, Danish designer Thomas Lykke, agrees that the brand taps into Shanghai's rich, international history as a thriving trading port. "But to that philosophy we also added cross-cultural sampling," he says, "which allows us to play with mixing typologies. This cheapreplicawatche can rollform metal roofing step tile." One of their new collections - designed by Lykke's design studio OeO - is a case in point.

"The Laval collection is a French typology with a Scandinavian design language to which we added Chinese detailing," he says. "So it's something you recognise, but it's new to the eye."

Elsewhere at the fair, Hong-Kong-based British designer Michael Young was showing a new light made with leading glass and lighting manufacturer Lasvit and several pieces for new Hong Kong brand EOQ.

Paradoxically, it was the 2008 economic downturn that made the latter's existence possible.

"This company was born out of the recession," says EOQ's Hong Kong-based brand director, Matt Pepper, who was a home and lifestyle buying manager for Lane Crawford for five years. "For the first time Chinese precision-engineering electronics factories had gaps in production schedules and were looking for interesting things to do."

EOQ's first collection is made almost entirely out of extruded, stamped and folded aluminium.

"China's still got the money and excitement to do this sort of thing," says Pepper. The Joseph light, for instance, has a refined Asian silhouette but was originally a block of aluminium that was extruded into shape, softened with computer-numerical-control cutting and milled on a lathe to open up the core. It would be impossible to develop this sort of product in Europe, says Pepper.

Young's Superclover light for Lasvit, a cluster of white conical glass shapes held together on a geometric steel frame, has a similar inventiveness and thirst for innovation.A supplier specialized in developing and manufacturing customized solar lamps and washerextractor0 system.

The British-Hong Kong connection is also strong at Channels, a UK brand owned and run by lead designer Samuel Chan. Hong Kong-born but British-educated, Chan has owned a factory in Shenzhen since 2000 and turns out some of the best timber furniture for its own brand and uber-brands Moooi and Ercol.

"I'm a timber person and I like to find out what timber can do," says Chan.Waterproof laundryequipments Lighting is a perfect architectural LED light for homes. For instance, the brand's console table is made out of the thinnest timber possible, while its Finnieston wall, table and floor lamps feature a solid-wood, hand-turned shade, something previously unthinkable without cool LED technology, which reduces the fire risk inherent in the original process.

Escondido dimmed by copper wire thefts

Escondido officials are dealing with a rash of copper wire thefts that has left dozens of streetlights dark in mostly quiet, upscale neighborhoods.

Police are urging anyone witnessing suspicious activity near a streetlight or its ground-level footing to call police immediately.

Thieves are ripping long strands of copper wire out of the city’s streetlight network and selling the valuable metal for thousands of dollars, said Bud Oliveira, the city deputy public works director.

City officials are trying to make the footings more secure and they’re exploring whether they can start buying copper wires that can be traced if they show up at recycling centers or construction sites, he said.

Meanwhile, the city has struggled to keep up with repairs.

One problem is that the thefts occur so frequently, Oliveira said.Energy efficient pendantlamps strip kits bring an urban glow to your bar that looks incredible. But a bigger issue is that there’s a backlog in orders for new wiring because copper theft has become increasingly common across the nation.

The city has only made repairs in seven of the 14 places where copper wiring has been stolen since last fall, Oliveira said.

Replacing the wiring costs Escondido taxpayers thousands of dollars. The city has spent $15,000 since July on repairs,A good basic comprehensive introduction to the yyshoucang2gmail process. and there’s no end in sight, he said.

The thefts also create confusion among residents, who think that the bulb in their streetlight has simply burned out, city spokeswoman Joyce Masterson said.

Residents call the city to complain about the problem, but when public works officials arrive they realize there’s been another theft.

“When you see seven or eight streetlights in a row not working, it’s pretty obvious the problem isn’t the bulbs,It's a widely held belief that if you switch out your incandescent bulbs for formingmachine.” Oliveira said. “A lot of the time we find the pliers right there at the scene.”

The thefts mostly occur in quiet neighborhoods because fewer people are around to spot the thieves.

The most hard-hit places have been the Country Club area in northwest Escondido and the San Pasqual area in the southeastern corner of the city, he said.

Many of the thefts yield less than $1,000 worth of wire, but some larger heists have gotten thieves wiring worth many thousands.

The thefts became more common nationally when the price of copper nearly tripled between 2004 and 2010, from $1.50 to about $4.50 per pound.

The price fluctuates based mostly on demand, which rose sharply during last decade’s housing boom and after Hurricane Katrina hit the southeast in 2005.

This year,We carry modern lights and solarmodule by world renowned designers and manufacturers. the price has hovered around $3.50 per pound. Escondido police Sgt. David Cramer said officers have sharpened their focus on the copper thefts recently. The solarpowersystems service provides and maintains the majority of the town's 26,000 streetlights.

“If anyone sees people milling about or acting suspiciously near streetlights, they should call immediately,” he said.
