Memo to teams facing Hand the rest of the season: choose your poison.
Defend the run and the Tigers will kill you in the air. Defend the pass, and the Tigers will hammer the ball down your throat. And the Tigers will light up the scoreboard if you commit turnovers.
A pair of Amity turnovers led to touchdowns in a 28-point second quarter as Hand defeated the Spartans 40-7 last Friday. The Southern Connecticut Conference victory kept Hand, ranked No. 5 in the New Haven Register’s Top 10 football poll, unbeaten in three outings. Amity fell to 1-2.
“Turnovers hurt us and the fact they (Hand) play two-platoon football,” Amity coach Bert Mozealous said. “They can wear you down.”
Armed with a 9-0 lead thanks to the first of four Henry Foye touchdown passes and a 27-yard field goal by Ryan Bell, the Tigers revved up their offense during a seven-minute span in the second quarter. Hand moved the ball well in the first quarter but wasn’t able to finish things off as often as head coach Steve Filippone liked.
“We started slow,” Filippone said. “We got three turnovers and converted one, but it seemed like we started off in the same hole. The defense gave us great field position but our offense sputtered.”

“That was really crucial,” said Mozealous. “Once guys stopped catching the ball, Tyler (Vallie) had a hard time getting his confidence back throwing the ball and he did some things he can’t do.”
