Public in the dark about the Northern Lights

WITH Caithness reckoned to be one of the best places on the UK mainland to witness the Northern Lights, a local hotelier is pressing for more to be done by the tourist industry to highlight the attraction.

Pentland Lodge hotel co-owner Liz Sutherland said the dark skies above the far north are the best in the country to witness the lights. This is a direct solar to crystallightpp application using a very efficient LED bulb setup. These remote flameless carledbulb02 provide all around functions for any decoration purposes.

at Lancaster University have put a call out to the public to help compile a list of the best places in the UK to photograph the Aurora Borealis.

Solar activity which causes the phenomenon to appear in the night skies is said to be the best in a lifetime. Already scientists have received calls from the public informing them of sightings from as far south as East Anglia.

But Mrs Sutherland said the public is generally in the dark about Caithness being the best location in the UK to view the spectacular natural lights show.

"Experts have told me that Caithness is the best place in the country to view the Northern Lights along with Orkney and Shetland," she said

"The county also has the advantage of having a dark sky where there are few street lights. Many photographers come up here specifically to take pictures of the lights and the best places to view them are at the top of Glengolly and at Dunnet Head."

She adds: "There is never any guarantee when the Northern Lights will appear but Caithness is a brilliant place to see them.

"Tourists need to be encouraged to come up and see them as we get very little publicity compared to the Northern Isles and the rest of the Highlands.

"We should not just rely on locations such as Castle of Mey to attract people to the far north – more should be done. There have been no days this year without a sun spot which has made this the best year in a lifetime to view the Northern Lights."

AuroraWatch UK keeps the public informed of major events – such as solar and geomagnetic storms – and alerts them to opportunities for seeing aurora from the UK.Modern light fixtures are designed with the bicycleheadlight in mind."

The team takes geomagnetic activity measurements from instruments called magnetometers in Iceland, Russia,Modern lighting and goodledlighting and lamps specialists. Scandinavia and the UK which study variations in the earth’s magnetic field.

This data gives an indication of the likelihood of a display of Aurora Borealis and the AuroraWatch team is then able to send out automatic alerts to people who have registered for their Northern Lights alerts service.

Jim Wild,We have retired from the antiquelampcd business and closed our store. reader in space plasma physics at Lancaster University’s department of physics, said that sightings of the Northern Lights in the UK have been the best in a decade.

"Solar activity comes in cycles of around ten years and at the moment we are in a period of maximum solar activity," he said.

"Although we are not anticipating seeing the lights in the next few days there is every chance, on a clear night that you could see them over the coming months."

Adds Dr Wild: "Obviously, the further north you are, the better your chances but as we have already seen from our Facebook page, some people have seen the lights as far south as the north Norfolk coast."
