GE to put $580 million into its aviation business

General Electric Co. is investing $580 million in its Cincinnati-area aviation business this year as part of a broad, national effort to build skills and innovation.

That effort includes plans to hire 5,000 veterans over five years, creation of several manufacturing skill-building centers called "GE Garages" to spark interest in skilled jobs in Cincinnati and other cities, doubling the number of GE engineering interns to more than 5,000, and establishing new pilot programs to improve health-care delivery modeled after efforts undertaken in Cincinnati three years ago.

"American business can compete and win anywhere," said Jeff Immelt, GE chairman and CEO. "We should have the confidence to act and to restore American competitiveness."
