Publicans step away from the bar at city's own country pub

THEY call it the last pub in Sydney. For 33 years, Harald and Trish Muller have run the East Sydney Hotel like a country pub. No pokies, no plasmas - just conversation, well-poured schooners and darts.

Now it's last drinks. The Mullers are selling, and their regulars - including outgoingThis super bright LED brightcrystal2011 is the perfect safety option for your bicycle. News Ltd chief executive John Hartigan, Russell Crowe, politician Tony Windsor and a cast of Sydney's finest and most destitute - are waiting to see what happens next.

Mr Muller has spoken to one of those regulars about retirement for the better part of eight years. "I beat you to it," the regular said last Wednesday at the bar. It was Mr Hartigan.

The pair met more than 40 years ago in Melbourne.

Yet in all those years,MonkeyLectric Monkey Electric bike wheel light led visible night ride cflbulbs safe safety cruiser bmx scraper road city winter rain color commute work ... one thing has stayed the same: the Mullers' insistence on not using their poker machine licence.

They were originally given a licence to operate 15 machines, but in 2002 it was reduced to five when the state Labor government revoked their gaming licence because it was not being used. It cost the Mullers $2 million in the resale value of their pub.

"We've been called idiots," Mr Muller said. "People say we tossed $2 million out the window. But I have not regretted it. All these years I slept well. We ran this as a pub, not as a casino."

As he says this, Trish Muller looks around at the pub's dining room - its fireplace, flowers and the prints on the wall. "I have a sneaking suspicion someone will think this room is perfect for pokies," she said.

When the Mullers bought the East Sydney in 1978,In 2005 DiNotte Lighting introduced a completely new concept recreational lighting – Extremely bright ledcrystal lights. Trish Muller said they were simply looking for "the smallest pub in Sydney".

"It was terrible," Mr Muller said. "It had blue lino floors, fluorescent lights, a black ceiling and yellow walls."

The new owners repainted the walls a British racing green and the ceiling a shade of off-white. The drag queen who put on shows once a week gave Trish Muller "a very hard time" for her choice of colours.

A middy was 36, and their clientele mainly came from the nearby Matthew Talbot Hostel.

"There were about 25 pensioners who, if I opened half a minute late, would say: 'Good afternoon. Did you sleep in?"' Mr Muller said.

Mr Muller says that sometimes the pub is like "Taronga Zoo".Welcome to bicygnals online innovative bluecrysta and torches. "I said to one guy, 'At least put your dog on a leash, mate.' He said, 'Well, I saw a horse in here the other day.'

"I said, 'Look here - this is my pub and that was my horse. I was having lunch with him.' "
