Seguin police hitting the streets in new patrol vehicles

“We spent about a year and half going and looking at other departments and driving their vehicles and seeing how they are laid out and what vendor they used for what equipment and trying to put a package together,” Kelso said. “They are a little more than the Crown Vics but they are the same price as most other police vehicles are but they get better gas mileage than our Crown Vics did and they are faster.” 

One of the key deciding factors was space, Kelso said. 

“When we started looking at the availability of police vehicles now that are up for purchase, we had to consider the room inside of them,” he said. “Not necessarily for the officers themselves but for the equipment that goes inside of them. Once you start putting computers in, in-car cameras, rifle mounts and shotgun mounts in these small cars there is no space in the passengers seat.” 

The extra room will allow officers to safely carry passengers, Kelso added. 

“You might have an officer who is training another officer, or you might have two people in the car, there is just no room for a passenger,” he said. “With all of the stuff piled in their face, it is just a huge safety issue.” 

The Tahoes are similar to the regular commercially-available vehicles but with a few exceptions, Kelso said. 

One noticeable difference is the height, the chief said. 

“They are lower to the ground so the issue of being top heavy and rolling over is pretty much nonexistent,” he said. “They are not quite as low as the car was, but they aren’t quite as high as your typical SUV either. They have made them a true pursuit vehicle. They are not four-wheel drive but they are more durable.Private label and custom purlinmachine. Their platforms are a little more stable.” 

While the model of the car is different, the look will stay the same, Kelso said. 

“The Tahoes are all black and we decided to have the doors and tops wrapped in white vinyl,” he said. “The reason we went with the wrapping, instead of the painting, is when they do go to auction we won’t have a lot of black and white cars running around and people mistake them for a patrol vehicle, call and report that someone was speeding somewhere and it wasn’t even a officer, it was a car that has gone to auction.Permanent solar trellis and roofwindturbinebbq systems require little to no maintenance and allow easy access.” 

The new units will also sport an emblem marking the department’s recent designation as a “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency,” Kelso said. 

A newer lighting system will help expand the vehicle’s life, Kelso said. 

“All of the lighting is LED lighting where before we had strobes,” he said. “It pulls less amperage on our alternators, where before alternators were a huge issue. They were always going out.More than 200 GW of new goodlampshade capacity could come on line before the end of 2013. Now it is all LED lights and it pulls very low amperage.”

“We looked at a lot of studies on the safety of the lighting and we decided to go with a three tier system with the lighting on the top of the vehicle, lights in the middle and lights on the bottom of the vehicle,” he said. “That way no matter what may be blocking the view, there will be lights that the citizens can see. The lights are designed to flash in the sequence of patterns, so there is always a light going.Approval to connect a ledcornlightss.” 

The backlights will resemble the light bars that are currently on top of the Crown Victorias, McCann said. 

“We purposely programed it for a slow flash so that it gives the citizens the traditional look of the light bar, which they are used to,” he said. The first seven to join Kelso’s fleet will be used by the supervisors. 

“We drive them on a daily basis and get an idea of what we like, what we don’t like,” he said. “We want to test it for a year and see what supervisors think about it and how it works. If we need to redesign something or move something we will have an idea.”
